T<\/span>he government has banned the term \u201cfake news\u201d after urging\u00a0ministers to\u00a0use\u00a0\u201cmisinformation\u201d or \u201cdisinformation\u201d instead.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The phrase \u2013 a favourite of\u00a0US President Donald Trump \u2013 will no longer appear in policy documents or official papers because\u00a0it is \u201ca poorly-defined and misleading term that conflates a variety of false information, from genuine error through to foreign interference in democratic processes,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n

While ministers may speak freely in the House of Commons, any strategy documents referring to election meddling or internet safety will need to use the new definition.<\/p>\n

The ban on the phrase\u00a0was\u00a0prompted by an\u00a0inquiry into \u201cfake news\u201d led by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Committee<\/a> to address the potential for social media to be misused to sway elections. It followed\u00a0concerns that Russia\u00a0meddled with the 2016 US presidential election and the UK referendum to leave the EU.<\/p>\n
