Within the span of a week, two high-profile Democrats verbalized<\/a> their party\u2019s perspective on politics. \u201cWhen they go low, we kick them,\u201d former attorney general Eric Holder frothed to a group of loyalists. \u201cThat is what this new Democratic Party is about,\u201d Barack Obama\u2019s former cabinet official proclaimed to shouts of \u201cfight, fight, fight.\u201d (Holder later backtracked.)<\/p>\n

Then a few days later Hillary Clinton told<\/a> CNN\u2019s Christiane Amanpour, \u201cYou cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about.\u201d Holder and Clinton have finally voiced the reality: There\u2019s politics. There\u2019s dirty politics. And then there\u2019s the trifecta of progressive politics\u2014lying, cheating, and stealing to win.<\/p>\n

Of course, everyone plays politics. Republicans used their Senate majority status in 2016 to reject President Obama\u2019s election-year Supreme Court nomination of Merrick Garland: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell flexed the muscle of the majority to control the Judiciary Committee\u2019s hearings and refused<\/a> to schedule the necessary hearing and vote for Garland.<\/p>\n

A few years earlier, Republicans instead found the filibuster their friend, when Democrats and Sen. Harry Reid controlled the Senate. But then Reid removed that political weapon from Republicans\u2019 arsenal when he nuked<\/a> the filibuster for lower-court nominees. Looking ahead, the retiring Reid suggested that if Democrats took back the Senate following the 2016 election, a further rule change would remove the filibuster option for Supreme Court nominees.<\/p>\n
