{"id":379602,"date":"2018-10-04T12:21:18","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T11:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/academics-rewrite-mein-kampf-using-radical-feminist-language-paper-accepted-rt-us-news\/"},"modified":"2018-10-04T12:21:18","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T11:21:18","slug":"academics-rewrite-mein-kampf-using-radical-feminist-language-paper-accepted-rt-us-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/academics-rewrite-mein-kampf-using-radical-feminist-language-paper-accepted-rt-us-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Academics &#8216;rewrite&#8217; Mein Kampf using radical feminist language, paper accepted \u2014 RT US News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2018.10\/thumbnail\/5bb5eea8fc7e93f34a8b45e8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        A trio of frustrated academics has perpetrated an elaborate hoax exposing malpractice within academic research by submitting 20 bizarre and deliberately ridiculous papers for publication, several of which were accepted.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Portland State University assistant professor of philosophy Peter Boghossian and mathematician James Lindsay are the authors behind the now infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogentoa.com\/article\/10.1080\/23311886.2017.1330439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;conceptual penis&#8217; as a social construct<\/a> paper in which the pair deployed intentionally dense language to obfuscate the fact that what they were discussing was absolute nonsense: namely that penises should not be considered as male reproductive organs but as social constructs.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/l3q2K5jinAlChoCLS\" width=\"409\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>However, their absurdist activism didn&#8217;t have the desired effect as a call to arms for academics to take themselves and their work more seriously and raise standards beyond partisan politics and ideology. So, in June 2017, the pair teamed up with Helen Pluckrose, the editor-in-chief of the current affairs magazine, <a href=\"https:\/\/areomagazine.com\/2018\/10\/02\/academic-grievance-studies-and-the-corruption-of-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Areo<\/a>, to carry out a more elaborate hoax.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fnaynamike%2Fvideos%2F335435513871039%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the next 10 months, the physicist, the philosopher and the medievalist submitted a total of 20 fake research papers for review and publication by cultural studies journals, discussing elements of modern progressivism including patriarchy theory, rape culture theory and Western imperialism, to parody what they dub &#8216;grievance studies.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/432888-facebook-youtube-news-censorship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ MORE:\u00a0\u2018Tech giants use fake news outcry to promote left-wing agenda, censor rival views\u2019 \u2013 expert to RT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSometimes we just thought a nutty or inhumane idea up and ran with it,\u201d <\/em>the writers explain<em>. \u201cWhat if we write a paper saying we should train men like we do dogs \u2013 to prevent rape culture? Hence came the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/0966369X.2018.1475346?journalCode=cgpc20&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dog Park<\/a>\u2019 paper.\u201d <\/em>The dog park paper was submitted under the keywords: Animaling, Black feminist criminology, dog park, feminist geography, queer geography, rape culture.<\/p>\n<p>The trio drew inspiration from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sokal_affair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sokal Affair<\/a> in which NYU physicist and mathematician Alan Sokal had his nonsense paper &#8216;Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity&#8217; published in an academic journal. Sokal famously called postmodernism <em>\u201cfashionable nonsense,\u201d<\/em> but the modern-day hoaxsters took things a few steps further.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Three intrepid academics just perpetrated a giant version of the Sokal Hoax, placing scores of fake papers in major academic journals. Call it Sokal Squared.<\/p>\n<p>The result is hilarious and delightful. They include:<br \/>* UCLA<br \/>* Temple <br \/>* Penn State<br \/>* TCD <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iVSvdUtCrG\">https:\/\/t.co\/iVSvdUtCrG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Yascha Mounk (@Yascha_Mounk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Yascha_Mounk\/status\/1047679636757536769?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 4, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/center><\/div>\n<p>For instance, they rewrote a 3,000-word excerpt of Adolf Hitler\u2019s Mein Kampf using the language of Intersectionality theory. The piece was reviewed and accepted by the Gender Studies journal Affilia.<\/p>\n<p>In another bizarre instance, the feminist philosophy journal Hypatia accepted a paper arguing that social justice advocates be exempted from mockery but should be free to chastise their political opponents as they see fit. The same paper also proposed censoring or silencing \u2018privileged students\u2019 who should instead conduct \u2018experiential reparations\u2019 including sitting on the floor, wearing chains or constantly being spoken over.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There&#8217;s the paper that doesn\u2019t just advocate stopping white males from speaking in class; it encourages teachers to institute a form of \u201cexperiential reparation\u201d by making their white students sit on the ground bound in chains.<\/p>\n<p>5\/n <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cBDPKHM6FF\">pic.twitter.com\/cBDPKHM6FF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Yascha Mounk (@Yascha_Mounk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Yascha_Mounk\/status\/1047336159171493888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/center><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/437665-zina-bash-conspiracy-denial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ MORE:\u00a0White supremacist conspiracy theory erupts over hand signal at Kavanaugh hearing<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The team also wrote papers discussing, among other topics: how male masturbation is sexual violence against the object of the man\u2019s lust (dubbed \u2018The Masturbation Paper\u2019); That AI is inherently dangerous as it is currently programmed to be masculinist and imperialist, based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lacanianism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lacanian psychoanalysis<\/a> and Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein (The \u2018Feminist AI paper\u2019); or the paper in which the trio argued for the introduction of \u2018fat bodybuilding\u2019 as <em>\u201ca fat body is a legitimately built body.\u201d<\/em> (This was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/21604851.2018.1453622?scroll=top&amp;needAccess=true&amp;journalCode=ufts20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fat Studies<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/yoJC2NNuYLAS58gewE\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The group even received four invitations to peer-review for the journals that had accepted their work, despite their attempts to make the papers borderline unintelligible. In total, seven of their papers were accepted and four published online, one of which has since been retracted.
