Kyrgyzstan authorities have pronounced a state of emergency following clashes around a gold ore mine between protesters and police over Centerra Gold’s mine in the north of the country. The violence left over 50 people injured.<\/p>\n

\n “Doctors have provided medical care to 55 people injured in
\n the Dzhety-Oguz district of the Issyk-Kul region during the
\n events over the Kumtor gold mine,”<\/i> a Kyrgyz Health Ministry
\n spokesman told Interfax on Friday.\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n Those injured in northern Kyrgyzstan include 13 law enforcement
\n personnel, five of whom were admitted to the Issyk-Kul regional
\n hospital.\u00a0Three of them sustained
\n injuries of medium gravity, the ministry spokesman said.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Police used tear gas and stun grenades in clashes with villagers
\n who tried to seize a power station feeding the mine and cut power
\n supplies, following several days of protests.\n<\/p>\n

\n The mine belongs to Toronto-listed Centerra Gold and is
\n Kyrgyzstan’s largest gold deposit. The protests started Tuesday
\n afternoon when hundreds of villagers had
\n blocked the road to Kumtor, threatening to move on the mine if
\n the government did not tear up its agreement with the
\n company.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Centerra Gold\u00a0received an environmental claim from the
\n Kyrgyzstan Environmental Protection and Forestry for $315 million
\n for alleged environmental damage. Centerra has said it is
\n studying the claims, but believe they are \u201cexaggerated or
\n without merit\u201d<\/i> and that the \u201cKumtor project complies with
\n Kyrgyz Republic laws on environmental, safety and health
\n standards.\u201d<\/i>\n<\/p>\n

\n Centerra\u2019s shares have dropped 33 percent in Toronto this year
\n after the Kyrgyz parliament decided to renegotiate the Kumor mine
\n contracts, which stoked fear it could shut down.\n<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n The villagers put forward several demands to Centerra Gold which
\n included building roads and a kindergarten, providing long-term
\n loans, offering more jobs and buying equipment for local
\n hospitals.\n<\/p>\n

\n On Thursday night \u00a0protesters took over an electricity
\n substation feeding the mine and forced its operators to cut off
\n power.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n Police on Friday cleared away demonstrators who had been blocking
\n the road to Kumtor and arrested 92 people, according to Prime
\n Minister Zhantoro Satybaldiyev.\n<\/p>\n
