He announced his resignation in a short statement in an interview on France Inter radio, apparently without warning either President Emmanuel Macron or Prime Minister Edouard Philippe. Just before, he had declared that the government had not reached any of its ecological objectives, because it was not interested in them. He added that his decision had \u201cmatured over many months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pundits and politicians turned Hulot, the former presenter on the extreme sports TV show \u201cUshua\u00efa,\u201d into a great moral conscience of France, and his resignation into a moral crisis of the government.<\/p>\n<p> <em>Le Point<\/em> called it \u201cA resignation that hurts,\u201d while <em>Le Monde<\/em> said the autumn would be \u201cstruck by the Hulot storm.\u201d Unsubmissive France (LFI) leader Jean-Luc M\u00e9lenchon hailed Hulot\u2019s gesture as \u201ca vote to censure Macron.\u201d Olivier Besancenot, of the Pabloite New Anti-capitalist Party (NPA), applauded Hulot\u2019s resignation on Twitter, writing: \u201cFor Macron it\u2019s not just the political back-to-school period, it\u2019s a car crash!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One-term ex-president Fran\u00e7ois Hollande saluted Hulot, intoning, \u201cHe was right!\u201d Hollande added, \u201cI know what he brings, he is both a conscience and an expert of planetary issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Macron\u2019s party, The Republic on the March (LRM), did not admit to being moved, but was at least \u201cbothered\u201d by Hulot\u2019s resignation. <em>Le Monde<\/em> wrote, \u201cThis departure upsets the vast majority of the members of the president\u2019s party, who were deeply attached to the person of this ecologist and&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2018\/09\/04\/hulo-s04.html\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Why are French media obsessed with Ecology Minister Hulot\u2019s resignation?
