If the renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement were good for working people, its content wouldn\u2019t be hidden. Just what the Trump administration and the Mexican government of Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto have cooked up we do not know, but given the proclivities of both it is not likely to be good.<\/p>\n

That the hurried-up deal appears to be intended to force Canada, which has the strongest regulations among the three NAFTA countries, into signing on disadvantageous terms, provides all the more reason to be skeptical. And, finally, a study of the United States Office of the Trade Representative\u2019s \u201cfact sheet\u201d leaves no doubt that any new NAFTA will be a windfall for multi-national corporations, at our expense.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s back up for a moment and remind ourselves that we should judge actions, not words. The contrast between Donald Trump\u2019s empty campaign lies and his administration\u2019s actual policies and actions are glaring, such as, for example, in infrastructure, where his plan is little more than a package of subsidies to connected corporations under the guise of \u201cpublic-private partnerships,\u201d which are\u00a0scams to funnel public money into corporate pockets<\/a>. So it is with so-called \u201cfree trade\u201d agreements, especially NAFTA.<\/p>\n

In July 2017, the Trump administration quietly published its \u201cSummary of Objectives for the NAFTA Renegotiation.\u201d The 18-page document\u00a0contained almost nothing concrete<\/a>\u00a0but did feature boilerplate…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
