{"id":374029,"date":"2018-08-19T17:43:19","date_gmt":"2018-08-19T16:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/street-artist-transforms-facebook-bus-adverts-with-forthright-message-rt-uk-news\/"},"modified":"2018-08-19T17:43:19","modified_gmt":"2018-08-19T16:43:19","slug":"street-artist-transforms-facebook-bus-adverts-with-forthright-message-rt-uk-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/street-artist-transforms-facebook-bus-adverts-with-forthright-message-rt-uk-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Street artist transforms Facebook bus adverts with forthright message \u2014 RT UK News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2018.08\/thumbnail\/5b795c15dda4c86f608b4591.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        A protesting street artist has altered Facebook\u2019s London billboard ads to include some home truths about the social media giant.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The ad campaign was launched in a bid to win back consumer trust in wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal where raw data from some 87 million Facebook profiles was harvested by the political consulting firm for the alleged purpose of influencing the US election.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/422407-cambridge-analytica-election-interference\/\">READ MORE: Cambridge Analytica formally accused of violating US election laws<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The billboards included messages such as \u2018Fake news is not our friend\u2019 and \u2018Data misuse is not our friend\u2019.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/422407-cambridge-analytica-election-interference\/\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The statements did not go far enough for artist Protest Stencil, however, who decided to enhance the posters with some harsh realities about the corporation\u2019s actual motives, as he sees them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Fake news is not our friend, it\u2019s a great revenue source\u2019, one updated billboard read, while another stated \u2018Data misuse is not our friend it\u2019s our business model\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Photos of the the parody adverts at London bus shelters have been shared online by Protest Stencil, who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/protestencil\/status\/1030913701442998274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a> that the make-over ads were created with <em>\u201csome leftover blue paint.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Facebook has been desperately trying to repair its damaged reputation in the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica data harvesting scandal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/435575-facebook-infowars-censorship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ MORE: Banning users &amp; throttling posts: Facebook leans on NATO think tank to \u2018sort out the Russian bots\u2019<\/a><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has continued its crackdown on \u2018fake news\u2019 by teaming up with MSM news outlets to fact-check news, and even went as far as partnering with NATO think tank the Atlantic Council for help in monitoring misinformation and foreign interference.
