{"id":37381,"date":"2013-05-30T09:16:12","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T08:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/study-500k-britons-rely-on-food-banks\/37381\/"},"modified":"2013-05-30T09:16:12","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T08:16:12","slug":"study-500k-britons-rely-on-food-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/study-500k-britons-rely-on-food-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: 500K Britons rely on food banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prominent British charities have found that nearly half a million people across the UK are now relying on food banks to survive hunger and destitution.\n<\/p>\n<p>The charities said in a report that living costs and the government\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s welfare reforms have pushed thousands more households into poverty and hardship.\n<\/p>\n<p>The study commissioned by \u00cb\u0153Church Action on Poverty\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 and \u00cb\u0153Oxfam said Britain is facing a dramatic rise in poverty, because of wage cuts, the squeeze on benefits and the continuing economic downturn.\n<\/p>\n<p>The study called for a Parliamentary inquiry into how the government\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s cuts, the increased use of sanctions and benefit error have driven up the number of \u00c5\u201chidden hungry.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Recent figures from the Trussell Trust, the biggest provider of food banks in the country, said the number of people using its services had leapt from 40,000 in 2009\/10 to more than 350,000 in 2012\/13.\n<\/p>\n<p>In their report entitled \u00cb\u0153Walking the Breadline\u00e2\u201e\u00a2, Oxfam and Church Action Poverty said the true number of hungry people could be as high as 500,000 because the problem is not being monitored properly.\n<\/p>\n<p>They said the surge has been mainly caused by changes to the benefit system such as the toughening of crisis loan eligibility rules, delays in payments, Jobseeker\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s Allowance sanctions and sickness benefit reassessments.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u00c5\u201cThe shocking reality is that hundreds of thousands of people in the UK are turning to food aid\u201d, said Oxfam boss Mark Goldring.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cuts to social safety-nets have gone too far, leading to destitution, hardship and hunger on a large scale.
