Shares in Bayer <\/span>took a nosedive<\/a> <\/span>on Monday \u2014 just days after newly-acquired Monsanto was <\/span>ordered<\/a> <\/span>to pay $289 million in damages to a man who alleged that the company\u2019s glyphosate-based herbicides, including the widely used weedkiller Roundup, caused his cancer.<\/p>\n

At one point the German pharmaceutical giant\u2019s shares fell by as much as 14 percent, Reuters <\/span>reported<\/a>, marking a loss in value of roughly $14 billion.<\/p>\n

It capped off the US trading day as one of the \u201cbiggest losers<\/a>,\u201d ending at a 10-percent loss.<\/p>\n

Friday was also a losing day for Monsanto, which Bayer AG controversially <\/span>acquired<\/a> <\/span>for $62.5 billion in June. In a landmark trial, a San Francisco jury unanimously found that the company failed to warn school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson, who\u2019s suffering from non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma, and other consumers of the cancer risks from its weed killers, and said the company acted \u201cwith malice or oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n

With this verdict and more than 4,000 other plaintiffs waiting in the wings, @MonsantoCo<\/a> could be in court for decades to come and it could cost them and its new owner, @Bayer<\/a>, hundreds of millions \u2013 if not billions \u2013 of dollars in damages. #Rounduptrial<\/a> https:\/\/t.co\/3ZyGr0eWko<\/a><\/p>\n

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) \u2014 a branch of the World Health Organization (WHO) \u2014 classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, but Monsanto says its Roundup is safe, and that it plans on appealing.<\/p>\n

Monday also marked the last day of the <\/span>public comment<\/a> <\/span>period for the finalization of the merger process, prompting a broad range of advocacy groups to voice their opposition once again.<\/p>\n
