Some former supporters of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his Sandinista party echo the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2018\/7\/27\/chomsky_criticizes_autocratic_nicaraguan_government_urges\">talking points<\/a>: Ortega\u2019s \u201centire government has been, in essence, neoliberal. Then it becomes authoritarian, repressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One would think that a neoliberal regime, especially if it were authoritarian and repressive, would be just the ticket to curry favor with Washington.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Threat of a Good Example<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Noam Chomsky\u2019s words, Nicaragua poses a <a href=\"https:\/\/chomsky.info\/unclesam01\/\">threat of a good example<\/a> to the US empire. Since Ortega\u2019s return election victory in 2006, Nicaragua had achieved the following, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nscag.org.\/resources\/July%20statement%20and%20briefing.pdf\">NSCAG<\/a>, despite being the second poorest country in the hemisphere:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Second highest economic growth rates and most stable economy in Central America.<\/li>\n<li>Only country in the region producing 90% of the food it consumes.<\/li>\n<li>Poverty and extreme poverty halved; country with the greatest reduction of extreme poverty.<\/li>\n<li>Reaching the UN Millennium Development Goal of cutting malnutrition by half.<\/li>\n<li>Free basic healthcare and education.<\/li>\n<li>Illiteracy virtually eliminated, down from 36% in 2006.<\/li>\n<li>Average economic growth of 5.2% for the past 5 years (IMF and the World Bank).<\/li>\n<li>Safest country in Central America (UN Development Program) with one of the lowest crime rates in Latin America.<\/li>\n<li>Highest level of gender equality in the Americas (World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report 2017).<\/li>\n<li>Did not contribute to the migrant exodus&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dissidentvoice.org\/2018\/08\/regime-change-in-nicaragua\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Roger D.
