Facebook said the \u201cinauthentic\u201d<\/em> accounts displayed activity similar to that of accounts the social media giant had earlier linked to the Internet Research Agency (IRA) \u2014 a Russian entity which western media have often linked to Russia\u2019s alleged attempts to influence the 2016 US presidential election.<\/p>\n Facebook, however, admitted in a blog post<\/a> that it was in the \u201cvery early stages\u201d<\/em> of its investigation and didn\u2019t have \u201call the facts\u201d<\/em> about the newly discovered accounts.<\/p>\n Read more<\/p>\n Evidence Facebook has is not strong enough to publicly attribute the pages to the IRA, and \u201cit\u2019s possible that a separate actor could be copying their techniques,\u201d<\/em> the company\u2019s chief security officer Alex Stamos said.<\/p>\n The company said that whoever set up the accounts \u201cwent to much greater lengths\u201d<\/em> to obscure their identities than the IRA had in the past, but also said it found links between some of the new accounts and previous Russia-linked accounts it had disabled last year.<\/p>\n Democrats were quick to jump on the Russia-blaming bandwagon, however, with Senator Mark Warner (D-Virginia) releasing a statement blaming Moscow for creating the Facebook accounts and suggesting this was \u201cfurther evidence\u201d<\/em> that the Kremlin was exploiting platforms like Facebook to \u201csow division and spread disinformation\u201d<\/em> in the US. Warner also said he hoped Facebook would continue working to identify \u201cRussian troll activity\u201d<\/em> on the website.<\/p>\n The news from Facebook comes just days after US President Donald Trump suggested that Russia might interfere in the upcoming midterm elections, but that they would be \u201cpushing very hard for the Democrats\u201d<\/em> because \u201cno President has been tougher on Russia\u201d<\/em> than him.<\/p>\n Facebook said it decided to share the information, despite not having all the facts, because there was a \u201cconnection\u201d<\/em> between the pages in question and a number of protests that were planned for Washington, DC next week.<\/p>\n READ MORE:\u00a0Blue Lives Matter claims Facebook’s ‘fake news’ rules have halved its audience<\/a><\/p>\n A total of 32 accounts on Facebook and Instagram were suspended. In its blog post, Facebook warned that it faces \u201cdetermined, well-funded adversaries who will never give up\u201d<\/em> and who are \u201cconstantly changing tactics\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen commended Facebook for its efforts and complimented it for taking the alleged election interference seriously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Via RT<\/a>.
