Irritated at the stalling of his border wall plans, US President Donald Trump has threatened to \u201cshut down\u201d the government in his latest tweet taking aim at Democrats over immigration reform.<\/p>\n
The Sunday morning tirade saw the president claim he \u201cwould be willing to \u2018shut down\u2019\u201d<\/em> the federal government if members of Congress from the opposition party didn\u2019t row in behind Republicans in voting for his immigration reform package, which includes releasing funds for the US-Mexico border wall that formed the cornerstone of his election campaign.<\/p>\n \u201cI would be willing to \u2018shut down\u2019 government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security,\u201d the president tweeted, \u201cwhich includes the Wall! Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n He also called for an immigration system \u201cbased on MERIT!,\u201d<\/em> adding that immigrants wanted by the USA needed to be \u201cgreat people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n READ MORE: Troops on Mexican border can\u2019t enforce immigration laws \u2013 California governor<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Trump’s criticism comes two weeks after a federal court order forced the administration to stall its controversial practice of separating the children of migrant families caught along the border.<\/p>\n While 1,800 children previously separated have since been reunited with parents and sponsors in the last several days, hundreds more remain separated.<\/p>\n Earlier this year, the federal government experienced two shutdowns in the space of three weeks. The first came over a failed deal<\/a> for Dreamers \u2013 the illegal migrants who came to the US as children \u2013 while the second lasted several hours after a successful filibuster by Republican Rand Paul stalled<\/a> a Senate vote passing budget legislation<\/p>\n\n\n
