THE WORLD\u2019S first floating city will boast its own government and cryptocurrency when it lays roots in the South Pacific in 2022, claim its backers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Building work on this isolated \u201cutopia\u201d will begin next year following the signing of an agreement with\u00a0French Polynesia\u2019s government in 2017.<\/p>\n

The futuristic island will be built in the Pacific Ocean<\/em><\/p>\n

The floating town is the brainchild of the\u00a0Seasteading Institute<\/a>, a non-profit co-founded by tech billionaire\u00a0Peter Thiel<\/a>\u00a0(who sits on Facebook\u2019s board and is a former adviser to US President Donald Trump).<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>It\u2019s teaming up with a private entity called Blue Frontiers to build 300 houses on a seaborne platform off the island of Tahiti that will run under its own governance and boast its own money.<\/p>\n

Joe Quirk, who heads up both organisations, has also stressed the eco-friendly potential of the sci-fi project, which will tap huge solar panels and wind turbines for clean energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would help people adjust to sea level rise, and experiment with voluntary governance,\u201d he previously said.<\/p>\n
