Speculation over the possibility that President Donald Trump\u2019s former attorney could cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s investigation into the president intensified on Monday, as details of\u00a0<\/span>ABC\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>in-depth interview<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>with Michael Cohen came to light.<\/p>\n

Cohen, who is under federal investigation for potential campaign finance violations and bank fraud regarding the payment he has claimed he\u00a0<\/span>personally made\u00a0<\/span><\/a>to adult film star Stormy Daniels on behalf of Trump in October 2016, told Stephanopoulos that shielding the president from the Mueller investigation is far from his top priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife, my daughter, and my son have my first loyalty and always will,\u201d Cohen told Stephanopoulos Saturday at a New York hotel in a 45-minute off-camera discussion. \u201cI put family and country first.\u201d<\/p>\n

The declaration was a far cry from earlier statements made by Cohen. Last year, he\u00a0<\/span>told\u00a0<\/a>Vanity Fair\u00a0that he would \u201ctake a bullet\u201d for his longtime client.<\/p>\n

Stephanopoulos gave details of the interview on \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cohen gave the interview shortly after hiring former federal prosecutor Guy Petrillo as his new attorney \u2014 bringing to an end an arrangement between his lawyers and Trump\u2019s in which the two legal teams shared information.<\/p>\n

When Stephanopoulos asked Cohen what he would do should Trump try to discredit him as he has with\u00a0<\/span>many of his opponents<\/a>, Cohen was clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not be a punching bag as part of anyone\u2019s defense strategy,\u201d he said. \u201cI am not a villain of this story, and I will not allow others to try to depict me that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
