The MPs from the Commons Defence Committee had earlier backed an increase in defense spending in a report released<\/a> last week. Titled \u2018Beyond 2%,\u2019 the paper argues for an increase in funding for the department from two percent of GDP (\u00a340bn) to three percent (\u00a360bn).<\/p>\n If awarded, that \u00a320 billion increase would in turn fill an existing funding gap currently in the department\u2019s budget, with Williamson under pressure to make tough decisions to keep the books balanced while carrying out a modernization of the military.<\/p>\n Read more<\/p>\n The committee argued that the extra money could be spent on increasing the readiness of the armed forces and bolstering Britain\u2019s anti-submarine warfare to counter possible threats from Russia.<\/p>\n While a more moderate increase to 2.5 percent of GDP has also been suggested by the committee which would \u201ccomfortably fill the \u2018black hole\u2019 in the existing MoD budget,\u201d<\/em> not investing in the UK Armed Forces would see its usefulness to the US diminish.<\/p>\n Speaking to BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today, Committee member Madeleine Moon, Labour MP for Bridgend, said the UK\u2019s Armed Forces have been \u201chollowed out\u201d<\/em> with the navy \u201cvery weak\u201d<\/em> and air capability \u201cdiminished.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cInfluence is really important because unless you can back it up with capability, you have no credibility,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n The sentiments were echoed by New Forest East Conservative MP and Committee Chair Dr. Julian Lewis. Speaking to LBC\u2019s Nick Ferrari breakfast program, Lewis said that the best deterrent to future war is maintaining strong conventional forces.<\/p>\n The MPs from the committee taking to the airwaves follows weeks of building tension between officials in the Ministry of Defence, led by Secretary of Defence Gavin Williamson, and the treasury backed by Prime Minister Theresa May.<\/p>\n READ MORE:\u00a0As May picks the NHS over defence, is the UK government really worried about Russia?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n The prime minister\u2019s unwillingness<\/a> to loosen the purse strings to help fund future modernization efforts has led to rumors of a palace coup led by Williamson.<\/p>\n Rumors reported at the weekend said Williamson had a group of between 50 and 70 MPs willing to vote against the government on policy if their demands for more funding were not met.<\/p>\n The debacle has caused an intervention from the former head of the armed forces, who said, \u201cit would be a great shame\u201d<\/em> if the armed forces budget was used as part of a \u201cpolitical game.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Speaking to BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today, General Lord Nick Houghton, who served as army chief of staff between 2013 and 2016, said that an increase in defense spending was \u201cnot just what the armed forces needs, it\u2019s what the country needs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe government now finds itself in a very difficult situation. It does have a defence programme which is currently wholly unaffordable within the available funding.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Houghton said the government\u2019s dilemma now surfaced around the questions: \u201cDo we increase the defence budget to make this ambition affordable, or do we actually diminish ourselves in terms of our status as a military power.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Think your friends would be interested?
