Dana Rohrabacher (R-California) submitted a \u2018sense of Congress\u2019 resolution to the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, urging the US to declare the \u2018One China\u2019 policy <em>\u201ceffectively obsolete\u201d<\/em> and recognize the <em>\u201cobvious reality\u201d<\/em> that Taiwan has been an independent country for over 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>The US should also <em>\u201caggressively support Taiwan&#8217;s full participation in the United Nations and any other international organizations of which the United States is a member, and for which statehood is a requirement for membership,\u201d<\/em> says the resolution, which was <a href=\"http:\/\/fapa.org\/wp\/2018\/06\/june-20-2018-us-congressman-introduces-legislation-calling-for-us-taiwan-diplomatic-relations-and-end-to-one-china-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted on the website<\/a> of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA).<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government in Taipei welcomed Rohrabacher\u2019s proposal. Regine Chen, a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told <a href=\"http:\/\/focustaiwan.tw\/news\/aipl\/201806210009.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Focus Taiwan<\/a> news channel that Taipei will <em>\u201ccontinue to work closely with our friends in the US Congress over the latest developments regarding the proposal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rohrabacher\u2019s initiative comes just a week after the US-funded American Institute of Taiwan (AIT) unveiled its new $256 million headquarters in Taipei, over Chinese protests. The US-based nonprofit acts as a de facto embassy of Washington on the disputed island.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/429512-us-taiwan-embassy-china-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2018.06\/thumbnail\/5b1febfddda4c8ac638b460e.jpg\" alt=\"A general view shows the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) new office complex in Taipei on June 12, 2018.  \u00a9 Sam Yeh\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cThis trend is highly dangerous for Sino-US relations and regional peace, since the Chinese mainland will make no compromise on the Taiwan question,\u201d<\/em> Da Wei, director of the Institute of American Studies at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/content\/1107883.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Times<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cChina will not retaliate against every single provocative move from the US, but when the provocations have accumulated and reached a specific level, China will no longer keep silent and may take countermeasures, which might surprise the US,\u201d<\/em> Da told the English-language Chinese daily.<\/p>\n<p>Rohrabacher\u2019s proposal comes at a time when the Trump administration has escalated the trade conflict with Beijing, with tariffs and counter-tariffs on $100 billion worth of Chinese and US goods scheduled to take effect on July 6.<\/p>\n<p>Diao Daming, a US expert who teaches at the Renmin University of China, told the Global Times that Rohrabacher\u2019s resolution is part of a trend in Washington, pointing to the January op-ed by the new National Security Adviser John Bolton, who also called for revisiting the \u2018One China\u2019 policy.<\/p>\n<p>In March, US President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/421552-taiwan-travel-act-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signed a law<\/a> promoting business and diplomatic exchanges with Taiwan, which also drew protests from Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>The US has adhered to a \u2018One China\u2019 policy since 1972. The Shanghai Communique, signed during President Richard Nixon\u2019s visit to China, says that Washington <em>\u201cacknowledges that Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Chinese constitution calls Taiwan <em>\u201cpart of the sacred territory of the People&#8217;s Republic of China\u201d<\/em> and calls for <em>\u201creunifying the motherland.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Taiwan was ceded to Japan in 1895, following the Chinese defeat in the Sino-Japanese war. US ships ferried the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist) forces to the island in 1945, to accept the surrender of the Japanese forces. The island became a refuge for the nationalists in 1949, after Mao Zedong\u2019s Communist forces triumphed in the Chinese Civil War. The Taiwan-based Republic of China lost its UN seat in 1971, however, when the People\u2019s Republic of China was recognized as the legitimate government.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Like this story?
