This was the term first coined by Frederick Engels in his famous study, <em>T<\/em><em>he Condition<\/em> <em>of the Working Class in England<\/em>. Writing in 1845, at the beginning of industrial capitalism, he explained, \u201cWhen society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death&#8230;\u201d and \u201cyet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Engels\u2019 indictment of an entire social system\u2014capitalism\u2014resonates more than 150 years later.<\/p>\n<p>This is because it speaks to the common experience of working people the world over. From poisoned water in the American city of Flint, Michigan to collapsing garbage dumps and mudslides in Colombo and Sierra Leone that have killed many, to an entirely preventable tower block inferno in London\u2014one of the richest cities in the world\u2014the lives of working people are considered expendable by a parasitic financial oligarchy that subordinates every aspect of social and economic life to its enrichment.<\/p>\n<p>Grenfell was the direct result of the deregulatory policies carried out by successive Labour and Conservative-led governments.<\/p>\n<p>From Margaret Thatcher\u2019s \u201cThere is no such thing as society,\u201d through the Blair government\u2019s insistence on being \u201cintensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich,\u201d to David Cameron\u2019s pledge to \u201ckill off\u201d the \u201cexcessive health and safety\u2026 albatross around the neck of British businesses,\u201d workers\u2019 living standards and conditions have been gutted to fill the bank&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2018\/06\/14\/pers-j14.html\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 One year since the Grenfell inferno 14 June 2018 One year ago, the worst high-rise fire in British history in Grenfell Tower cost the lives of 72 people.
