Up to 100 LGBT rights activists took part in Ukraine’s first gay rally in Kiev, while anti-gay demonstrators shouted, \u201cUkraine is not America. Kiev is not Sodom.\u201d Police arrested 13 people for trying to break up the march.<\/p>\n

The march was held away from the central Kiev and lasted only 40
\nminutes, but was hailed as a breakthrough. The rally gained
\nworldwide support after Amnesty International asked Kiev
\nauthorities to approve the gay march and protect its activists.<\/p>\n

The event had been threatened with a ban by a local court.
\nNevertheless, it went forward on Saturday amid heightened security,
\nwith 500 policemen guarding the protesters.<\/p>\n

The rally was backed by the US Embassy to Ukraine and the EU
\nDelegation, which called on police to “effectively ensure that
\nall persons can exercise their rights to freedom of peaceful
\nassembly without putting their personal safety at risk.”<\/i><\/p>\n

Last year, LGBT activists canceled a similar protest in Kiev
\nover reported threats of violence. One of the organizers was
\nallegedly beaten up by a group of men.<\/p>\n

“This event will go down in the history of Ukraine as one of
\nthe key developments in the fight for equal human rights,”<\/i>
\nprotest organizer Olena Semenova told Reuters.<\/p>\n

Orthodox Christian activists who protested against the rally
\nsaid they came to \u201cprotect family values.”<\/i><\/p>\n

“We want to protect our children from homosexual propaganda.
\nThis parade popularizes homosexuality. It can influence our
\nchildren for their whole life,”<\/i> Ioksana Keresten said.<\/p>\n

Last year, the Ukrainian parliament dismissed a second reading
\nof a bill that would have outlawed the \u201cpromotion of
\nhomosexuality.\u201d Proposed legislation to criminalize discrimination
\nagainst homosexuals has also been postponed.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, protesters broke up pro-LGBT rallies in
\nGeorgia and Russia.<\/p>\n
