His best known and internationally acclaimed dramatic features include, <em>Gamperaliya<\/em> (<em>Changes in the<\/em> <em>Village<\/em> [1963]), <em>Nidhanaya<\/em> (<em>The Treasure<\/em> [1972]) and <em>Wekanda Walau<\/em><em>wa<\/em> (<em>Mansion by the Lake<\/em> [2002]), Sri Lanka\u2019s first submission to the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageFull\" style=\"width:480px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/61f7bb58-5590-4ca6-88b0-8f5617541e2N\/image.jpg?rendition=image480\"  width=\"480\" style=\"width:480px;\" \/><span>Lester James Peries, photo courtesy of Sarath Perera<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Peries\u2019s best films, like the great dramas directed by India\u2019s Satyajit Ray and Japan\u2019s Akira Kurosawa, have left their mark on Asian and world cinema.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nidhanaya,<\/em> which is regarded by many as Peries\u2019s greatest film, won the Silver Lion award at the 1972 Venice Film Festival and was named as one of the most outstanding 100 films of the twentieth century by the Paris-based Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que Fran\u00e7aise. <em>Gamperaliya<\/em>, based on a famed novel by Sri Lankan writer Martin Wickramasinghe, was awarded a Golden Peacock award at the International Film Festival of India in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Peries made two indelible contributions to Sri Lankan filmmaking. First, his pioneering work helped win acceptance of cinema as a recognised art form in the early years of the former British colony.<\/p>\n<p>In 1947, and during the first decade of Sri Lanka cinema, most films screened in the island-nation were produced in South India and heavily influenced by that culture. Many of the directors, in fact, were from India.
