In order to take full control of the global food chain the world\u2019s largest owner of patents on seeds Monsanto is lobbying, bribing, suing small farmers out of business and altering scientific research, geopolitical analyst F. William Engdahl told RT.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands around the world gathered on Saturday in a
\nglobal move dubbed ‘March Against Monsanto’.<\/a><\/p>\n

Activists are calling for labeling of food containing GMOs and
\nfurther scientific research of the effects of GMO crops that while
\nbanned in several countries over alleged health threats still
\nremain legal in many others.<\/p>\n

Protesters all across the US
\njoined<\/a> the march calling for a boycott of Monsanto products,
\nfollowing the Senate\u2019s decision to turn down a bill which requires
\nthe labeling of GM food.<\/p>\n

RT:<\/b> What’s wrong with GM food?<\/i>
<\/b><\/p>\n

William Engdahl:<\/b> The fundamental problem with GM food
\nthat it\u2019s genetically and biologically unstable. There\u2019s no genetic
\nmodification known to science and this I have from some of top
\nscientists in the world on this question that\u2019s stable \u2014 it\u2019s
\nalways mutating. And No.2, all the GM products that are in the
\nhuman and animal food chain over the last 20 years are modified
\nprimarily to do one thing \u2014 80 per cent of all the GM is modified
\nto accept chemicals, the pesticides. Monsanto Roundup being the
\nmost prominent of them, which are highly, highly toxic and they\u2019re
\nmodified to be resistant to that deadly chemical so that it kills
\neverything inside, except the Monsanto corn or the Monsanto soy
\nbeans or what will you. All those chemicals are equally as
\ndangerous to the human food chain as the GMO seeds themselves.<\/p>\n

\"Children<\/p>\n

RT:<\/b> Why have so many people in different countries
\ntaken to the streets to demonstrate against this US company
\nnow?<\/i><\/p>\n

WE:<\/b> I think for one very simple reason Monsanto is the
\ncompany. They are the world\u2019s largest owner of seeds. They\u2019ve
\nbought up all those small seed companies to control those seed
\nvarieties of wheat, of rice, of corn and soy beans and so forth.
\nNo.2 Monsanto bought up a company that gives Monsanto a patent on
\nwhat are called terminator seeds, which self-destruct, the seeds
\ncommit suicide after one harvest season. So, farmers are unable to
\ntake part of their seeds and replant them for the next harvest
\nseason \u2014 something that never in history has been possible before
\nthis Monsanto development. But Monsanto is the metaphor for genetic
\nmanipulation of the food chain and they are by far the largest \u2014 of
\ncourse, you have other companies like Syngenta in Switzerland, you
\nhave BASF, which is a partner of Monsanto in Germany. You have Dow
\nand DuPont Chemical. But Monsanto is really the giant of the four
\nhorsemen of the GMO Apocalypse.<\/p>\n

RT:<\/b> Why is the US government so keen to protect the
\ninterests of Monsanto?<\/i><\/p>\n

WE:<\/b> I think this is the strategic interest of the US
\nagribusiness lobby, the lobby of Bush senior as president in 1992.
\nMonsanto went to the White House and had a closed-door meeting with
\nBush, and got him to agree to make sure there are no government
\ntests whatsoever on the health and safety of GMO products before
\nthey were released to the commercial public. That was called the
\ndoctrine of ‘substantial equivalence’\u2014 it\u2019s a fraudulent doctrine
\nif you just analyze the name, it\u2019s by no means scientifically
\nrigorous. So there have been up until recently no long-term tests
\nbeyond what ninety day short-term studies Monsanto gave to the
\ngovernment to say \u2018everything is hunky-dory.\u2019 It turns
\nout evidence has been uncovered by whistleblowers who say we were
\nforced to alter the scientific data for Monsanto so it showed that
\nthe results were positive. You have the fox guarding the chicken
\nhouse here with Monsanto verifying the health and safety of
\nits own products. But it\u2019s the idea of monopoly on seeds, a patent
\non monopoly on seeds worldwide that makes the whole question of
\nMonsanto and GMO question so extremely important in so many
\ncountries. They are trying everything to bribe and influence the
\nEuropean commission in Brussels. A study came out in France at the
\nCaen university September last year, it was published in the PEW
\nreview , a serious scientific journal of toxicology , by Dr
\nSeralini and his French colleagues, showing that rats fed with GMO
\nMonsanto rice , or corn rather, had huge incidents of cancer tumors
\ncompared with non GMO rats. They had enormous organ damage and
\ndeath rates five times that of normal rats. The study was
\nsuppressed by the EU food safety administration. It turns out that
\nmost of the scientists on the panel had ties to Monsanto. So it\u2019s
\njust the corruption that Monsanto tries to infiltrate its way, they
\ntry to block labeling in California, because that would damage
\ntheir whole product situation in America. People are beginning to
\nwake up. I think there is change going on not only against the
\nMonsanto but biological engineering of our food chain.<\/span><\/p>\n
