The California Assembly discussed Thursday a bill that would replace Abraham Lincoln or George Washington\u2019s birthday with International Socialist Workers\u2019 Day as a paid holiday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

California Democrat Assemblyman Miguel Santiago<\/a> introduced Bill AB-3042<\/a>, which would allow schools to replace Washington Day and Lincoln Day with Presidents\u2019 Day and install an \u201cInternational Workers\u2019 Day\u201d \u2014 conventionally known as \u201cMay Day\u201d \u2014 as a second holiday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m aghast that a bill like this would be able to get through committee,\u201d California Republican Assemblyman Matthew Harper said to the Assembly. \u201cAre we in competition to be the laughing stock of the United States?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we going that far to the left?\u201d Harper asked. \u201cThis is ridiculous; this is insane; this is un-American. And for folks who think that the U.S. won the Cold War with the Soviet Union, this makes it sound like we\u2019re going in the other direction \u2014 that indeed California is kowtowing to the Soviet domination of the Cold War.\u201d<\/p>\n
