But due to a bug, all user passwords were stored in plaintext in an internal log. Agarwal says that they have investigated and fixed the bug and so far have found no signs of misuse or breach of user data.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter uses a process called hashing and a function called \u201cbcrypt\u201d to replace user passwords with random numbers and letters which are stored in Twitter\u2019s system, this is how Twitter validates all user data and is an \u201cindustry standard\u201d according to Agrawal. Somehow, this process failed,\u00a0resulting in all of the site\u2019s 300 million users\u2019 passwords being made visible to multiple employees working at the company.<\/p>\n<p>Agrawal tweeted that Twitter \u201cdidn\u2019t have to\u201d alert users to the error but did so as they believed it was the \u201cright thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p>We are sharing this information to help people make an informed decision about their account security.
