The McArthurs have said they cancelled the order because the cake\u2019s message conflicted with their religious beliefs as evangelical Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Gareth Lee had wanted to celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, which was to take place on the same day as his wedding, with the pro-gay marriage message on the cake. Same-sex marriage is a devolved issue for the UK, which Northern Ireland has not legally recognized \u2013 unlike the rest of the British Isles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/393384-dup-uk-scotland-gay-marriage-foster\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2017.06\/thumbnail\/594a7115c46188fd418b45d3.jpg\" alt=\"Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Arlene Foster \u00a9 Clodagh Kilcoyne\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Describing how he felt at being refused his wedding cake order, Lee told the initial hearing in 2015 that it made him <em>\u201cfeel I\u2019m not worthy, a lesser person and to me that was wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Arriving at court today before the hearing, the McArthurs insisted that it has never been about the person, but rather <em>\u201calways been about the message,\u201d<\/em> the BBC reports.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel McArthur told reporters:<em> \u201cWe didn\u2019t say no because of the customer; we\u2019d served him before, we\u2019d serve him again. It was because of the message. But some people want the law to make us support something with which we disagree.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The case appears to be a clash over faith, freedom, and rights. A 2016 judgement handed down by Northern Ireland\u2019s lord chief justice, Sir Declan Morgan, said that the \u2018appellants\u2019 [the McArthurs] should not <em>\u201cprovide a service that only reflects their own political or religious message in relation to sexual orientation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Five supreme court justices will hear the McArthurs\u2019 appeal in Belfast: the president, Lady Hale, the deputy president, Lord Mance, Lady Black, Lord Hodge, and Lord Kerr.
