MP Liz Truss, chief secretary to the Treasury, is facing a barrage of criticism after she retweeted an article from right-wing magazine the Spectator which praised Mumsnet \u2013 an online forum which Pink News claims <\/a>is led mainly by anti-trans feminist women. The article praised the group for allowing users to \u201cquestion the tenets\u201d<\/em> of transgenderism \u2013 such as whether \u201cself-defined gender trumps biological sex.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Sharing the article, Truss tweeted:\u00a0<\/p>\n Mumsnet boss Justine Roberts has dismissed allegations against the platform of transphobia, branding critics \u201cthought-police.\u201d<\/em> She also clarified that the site is \u201cprepared to take any potential advertising hit<\/em>\u201d rather than clamp down on Mumsnet contributors.<\/p>\n Read more<\/p>\n Truss\u2019 comments are likely to enrage her boss, Prime Minister Theresa May, who in October 2017 said her government is \u201cdetermined to eradicate homophobic and transphobic bullying.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The endorsement comes after a whistleblower last week alleged that Mumsnet staff had failed to act against users\u2019 transphobic hate speech and their calls for a new Section 28, the infamous law imposed under former PM Margaret Thatcher which banned the promotion of homosexuality in schools. Now repealed, the law stirred so much backlash that former PM David Cameron apologized over it in 2009.<\/p>\n Delia Johnston, an activist for trans sportspeople, slammed Truss\u2019 tweet, before branding the cabinet minister a \u201cterf in disguise\u201d<\/em> \u2013 referring to so-called \u2018trans women exclusionary feminism,\u2019 a controversial subculture of feminism.<\/p>\n \u201cShe is giving kudos to Mumsnet who are particularly vicious on this particular front. Truss could be investigated for backing a group that is effectively advocating violence against the transgender community.
