Immigration is an issue that causes tempers to flare.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many Americans want our borders to be firmly closed to\u00a0outsiders, especially if those outsiders are brown. Having lived in and been welcome in another country, and having brought my children to the United States, obviously, I\u2019m pro-immigration.<\/p>\n

But only to a point.<\/p>\n

We had to jump through a lot of expensive hoops to legally be in the countries where we moved. I don\u2019t think that the hoops should be as expensive as they are, but I definitely believe that some requirements\u00a0must<\/em>\u00a0exist. We can\u2019t allow an unchecked influx to upturn our culture.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, many Americans want to welcome any and all refugees and immigrants, forming\u00a0sanctuary cities<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and\u00a0even sanctuary states<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 that reject our immigration laws.<\/p>\n

\n

The law prohibits state and local police agencies from notifying federal officials in many cases when immigrants potentially subject to deportation are about to be released from custody.<\/p>\n

Administration officials argued that the state measures not only hinder their ability to carry out federal law, but also put immigration agents and communities at risk.<\/p>\n

The other laws administration officials seek to challenge\u00a0make it a crime for business owners<\/a>to voluntarily help federal agents find and detain undocumented workers, and create\u00a0a state inspection program<\/a>\u00a0for federal immigration detention centers. During the election, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton said it was our humanitarian obligation to take in refugees.<\/p>\n

Turning away orphans, applying a religious test, discriminating against Muslims, slamming the door on every single Syrian refugee\u2014that\u2019s just not who we are.
