{"id":357894,"date":"2018-04-22T09:43:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-22T08:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/white-house-considers-national-emergency-powers-against-chinese-investment\/"},"modified":"2018-04-22T09:43:59","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T08:43:59","slug":"white-house-considers-national-emergency-powers-against-chinese-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/white-house-considers-national-emergency-powers-against-chinese-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"White House considers \u201cnational emergency\u201d powers against Chinese investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>White House considers \u201cnational emergency\u201d powers against Chinese investment<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    By<br \/>\n    Nick Beams<br \/>\n    <br \/>21 April 2018<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>The Trump administration is actively considering invoking legislation previously regarded as covering only military conflicts to step up its trade war measures against China in the area of high-tech development.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to a conference in Washington on Thursday, Heath Tarbert, assistant Treasury secretary for international markets and investment, said the administration was looking at invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as part of the moves against China ordered by Trump last month.<\/p>\n<p>Under the 1977 law Trump could declare a national emergency in response to an \u201cunusual and extraordinary threat\u201d which would allow him to block transactions and even to seize assets.<\/p>\n<p>Use of the legislation has been raised previously, but this is the first time an administration official has confirmed that it is under consideration. Its invocation would be directed against Chinese investment and activities in areas regarded as central to US \u201cnational security\u201d including semi-conductors, new mobile phone technology and robotics.<\/p>\n<p>The move was foreshadowed by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross earlier this week.
