Following the ill-fated Unite the Right demonstration, the push to remove Confederate memorials escalated. Many conservative pundits treated the iconoclasts\u2019 arguments against Confederate memorials in good faith. In the long run, they will learn the real target is not the Confederacy, but all of European-America. Many non-whites don\u2019t to remove just statues of whites, but white people themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe monuments should go,\u201d declared Rich Lowry of National Review, denouncing Robert E. Lee for having \u201cbetrayed the U.S. government\u201d and having fought \u201con the side devoted to preserving chattel slavery.\u201d Gracy Olmstead at The Federalist said, \u201cthese memorials are splitting us further and further apart.\u201d In the Weekly Standard, Berny Belvedere argued that the removal of the memorials was a \u201cgood thing\u201d because they were \u201cbackward-looking,\u201d unlike the \u201cforward-looking memorials\u201d which \u201cpromote our core values and herald American virtues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet this begs the question of what those \u201ccore values\u201d are and who determines them. Last August, President Donald Trump raised the question of whether the Founding Fathers\u2014the wellspring of those \u201ccore values\u201d\u2014would be the next target.
