Rigby was described as an \u201cextremely popular and witty
\nsoldier\u201d<\/i> with a \u201clarger than life personality who was also a
\n\u201cloving father to his son Jack, aged 2 years.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
He joined the Army in 2006 and upon completion of his infantry
\ntraining course, was selected to be a member of the Corps of Drums
\nand posted to 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers \u2014 an
\ninfantry regiment of the British Army.<\/p>\n

Rigby
\nwas first deployed on Operations to Helmand province, Afghanistan
\nin April 2009, where he served as a member of the Fire Support
\nGroup in Patrol Base Woqab.<\/p>\n
Lieutenant Colonel Jim Taylor MBE, Commanding Officer Second
\nFusiliers, described Rigby as \u201can experienced and talented side
\ndrummer and machine gunner, he was a true warrior and served with
\ndistinction in Afghanistan, Germany and Cyprus.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
Rigby took up a recruiting post in London in 2011, where he also
\nassisted with duties at Regimental Headquarters in the Tower of
\nLondon.<\/p>\n
Taylor said his \u201cability, talent and personality made him a
\nnatural choice to work in the recruiting group.\u201d<\/i> On Wednesday
\nafternoon in Woolwich, South London, two men drove onto the
\nsidewalk and hit Rigby with their car before getting out and
\nhacking away at his body with knives and meat cleavers while
\nshouting<\/p>\n
“Allahu Akbar!”<\/i> The suspects, one of them identified as
\nBritish born 28-year-old Michael Adebolajo, spoke at length to
\nbystanders and made politically charged statements before the
\nMetropolitian Police\u2019s armed response team finally arrived,
\nshooting them both.<\/p>\n
Rigby died at the scene, while the attackers were detained and
\nare currently hospitalized under armed guard.<\/p>\n
It was reported on Thursday that both of the alleged assailants
\nwere part of earlier investigations carried out by MI5 \u2014 Britain\u2019s
\ninternal security service. However, intelligence services assessed
\nthat neither suspect posed a threat to life.<\/p>\n
British Prime Minister David Cameron said the Intelligence and
\nSecurity Committee would carry out a full probe to determine
\nwhether or not there were any failings in the run-up to the
\nattack.<\/p>\n
