President Donald Trump warned Russia to \u201cget ready\u201d for missile strikes on Syria, in an off-the-cuff response on Wednesday morning to an alleged chemical weapons attack by Syrian government forces.<\/p>\n
The US leader tweeted: \u201cRussia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and \u2018smart!\u2019 You shouldn\u2019t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The tweet provoked a flurry of reactions. Journalist Glenn Greenwald warned against a \u201cdangerous and volatile\u201d<\/em> confrontation with Russia, and called those pushing Trump towards war \u201cdangerous idiots.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n A nice, chilling reminder of how dangerous and volatile confrontation with Russia can be. During his election campaign, Trump blasted Hillary Clinton for her eagerness to strike Syria, telling reporters in a 2016 interview:<\/p>\n “You\u2019re going to end up in World War Three over Syria if we listen to Hillary Clinton. You\u2019re not fighting Syria any more, you\u2019re fighting Syria, Russia and Iran, alright? Russia is a nuclear country, but a country where the nukes work as opposed to other countries that talk.”<\/em><\/p>\n Trump\u2019s tweet on Wednesday morning, while not an official declaration of war, seems to represent a complete shift in attitude by the president, and one that many of his voters will remember in 2020:<\/p>\n Trump truly believes he is the movement, he doesn’t have any sense that, as great as he was (and NO ONE could have did what the did in 2016), the movement exists beyond him.
