The first part was posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2018\/03\/14\/berl-m14.html\">March 14<\/a>, the second on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2018\/03\/16\/berl-m16.html\">March 16<\/a> and the third on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2018\/03\/20\/ber3-m20.html\">March 20<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, the European refugee crisis played a central role at the Berlin film festival with the documentary <em>Fire At Sea<\/em> ( <em>Fuocoammare<\/em> ) by Italian director Gianfranco Rosi taking the festival\u2019s main prize. <em>Fire at Sea<\/em> graphically portrayed the plight of refugees attempting to enter Europe, although it essentially concluded with an appeal to the European Union (EU) to rethink its policies.<\/p>\n<p>Following a dearth of films dealing with the theme at the 2017 Berlinale, it was significant that a handful of movies this year dealt powerfully and insightfully dealt with the EU\u2019s criminal abuse of refugees.<\/p>\n<p><em>Styx<\/em> by the Austrian director Wolfgang Fischer grabs our attention from the start with a dramatic road accident. The accident provides the backdrop for introducing the main character in the film, the paramedic Rieke (Susanne Wolff). In her 40s, Rieke is self-assured, proficient and ready for the holiday of a lifetime. She plans to sail a 12-metre yacht singlehandedly from Gibraltar to Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, some halfway between Africa and South America.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageFull\" style=\"width:480px; oveflow:hidden;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wsws.org\/asset\/aaffe945-9ac8-4877-ac2c-8bfce22ba8dA\/image.jpg?rendition=image480\"  width=\"480\" style=\"width:480px;\" \/><span><em> Styx <\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p>For long stretches, <em>Styx<\/em> has little dialogue. Instead, we are introduced to the complex mechanics of sailing a small boat in the middle of the ocean, including navigating a fierce nighttime storm.
