The former Wimbledon champ called the broadcaster an \u201cold boys\u2019 network,\u201d following revelations co-host John McEnroe gets 10 times more for the same job.  <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In an upcoming interview with the BBC \u2013 a broadcaster rocked by repeated claims of pay inequality \u2013 the nine-time Wimbledon winner\u00a0is expected to reveal\u00a0she received approximately \u00a315,000 (US$21,000) for her commentary gig. McEnroe, a three-time Wimbledon winner, is rumored to have received between \u00a3150,000 and \u00a3200,000.<\/p>\n<p>Navratilova has called out the publicly funded media outlet for being misleading their employees. She claimed the BBC told her she was being paid similar to men doing a similar job. She commented:<em> \u201cWe\u2019re not being told the truth, that\u2019s for sure\u2026 It\u2019s still the good old boys\u2019 network\u2026 The bottom line is that male voices are valued more than women\u2019s voices.\u201d<\/em> She added that her agent will now push for a higher pay rate.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3scJRJ95k58\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The BBC has attempted to explain themselves, saying McEnroe\u2019s work was <em>\u201ca different scale, scope and time commitment.\u201d<\/em> It stated that their roles were not equal, therefore pay parity was not required.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAlong with Sue Barker, John is regarded as the face of our Wimbledon coverage,\u201d<\/em> a representative said. <em>\u201cHe is a defining voice within the BBC\u2019s coverage. He is widely considered to be the best expert\/commentator\u00a0in the sport, highly valued by our audiences and his contract means he cannot work for another UK broadcaster without our permission. This is in contrast with Martina\u2019s 10 appearances.<\/p>\n<p>The gender pay gap debate was sparked with the publishing of a list of the BBC\u2019s top earners and their salaries. Only a third of those were women, and the top slots belonged to men \u2013 with the highest being breakfast DJ Chris Evans who earned between \u00a32.2 million and \u00a32.25 million in 2016\/2017.<\/p>\n<p>It led to action by 40 of the BBC\u2019s biggest females names, who famously penned an open letter to upper management. Names attached included Clare Balding, Emily Maitlis and Claudia Winkleman.<\/p>\n<p>This initiative prompted promises of changes to the BBC\u2019s pay structure. Findings discovered that in general men were paid nearly 10 percent more than women. Some 500 people were judged to have had a smaller wage due to their gender.<\/p>\n<p>BBC China Editor Carrie Gracie quit her role in an effort to oppose the pay gap, returning to her previous position in the BBC newsroom. Ex-presenter Maxine Mawhinney is understood to be thinking about bringing a lawsuit over pay disparity.<\/p>\n<p>Fran Unsworth, BBC director of news and current affairs, said: <em>\u201cWe don\u2019t think we have acted illegally in regard to equal pay. That doesn\u2019t mean, however, there won\u2019t be instances and cases where there is inequality and we need to address those.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Like this story?
