British historian Niall Ferguson warns that Silicon Valley will decide the winners of future elections unless conservatives do something to combat social media censorship and skewed algorithms. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we do nothing, the mid-terms are going to be worse than you already think \u2013 a lot worse \u2013 because never again will the network platforms in Silicon Valley allow conservative candidates to use them as Donald Trump\u2019s campaign used them in 2016,\u201d said Ferguson, adding that Facebook couldn\u2019t believe how vital their platform was in helping Trump get elected.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he would have become president without Facebook,\u201d said Ferguson.<\/p>\n

The historian said that conservatives had to come up with a better idea to combat social media control than \u201cself-regulation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cConservatives are simply going to be at a disadvantage, the algorithm is already in some ways skewed against far-right elements\u2026.but who decides? Who decides who is \u2018Alt-Right\u2019 and doesn\u2019t belong in the public sphere?\u201d asked Ferguson, adding that after Charlottesville, Silicon Valley chief executives decided, \u201cif they don\u2019t like the cut of your jib, goodbye, you\u2019ll be on page 10 of the search.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to psychologist Robert Epstein<\/a>, Google\u2019s ranking algorithm for search results, \u201ccould determine the outcome of upwards of 25 percent of all national elections\u201d simply by means of listing positive and negative articles in an order that favors one candidate over the other.<\/p>\n
