{"id":35200,"date":"2013-05-22T07:23:04","date_gmt":"2013-05-22T06:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/us-senate-committee-votes-to-arm-syrian-rebels\/35200\/"},"modified":"2013-05-22T07:23:04","modified_gmt":"2013-05-22T06:23:04","slug":"us-senate-committee-votes-to-arm-syrian-rebels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/us-senate-committee-votes-to-arm-syrian-rebels\/","title":{"rendered":"US Senate committee votes to arm Syrian rebels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A US Senate committee had passed a bill that would allow, if signed for the Obama administration to supply arms to Syrian opposition \u2013 a move that could threaten the entire region if these weapons end up in terrorist cells operating on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations <span>15-3 vote showed<br \/>\nbipartisan support among US politicians for arming the<br \/>\nrebels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It remains uncertain if the full Senate will vote on the<br \/>\nlegislation that calls to <i>\u201cprovide defense articles, defense<br \/>\nservices, and military training\u201d<\/i> directly to the opposition on<br \/>\nthe ground Syria who <i>\u201chave been properly and fully vetted and<br \/>\nshare common values and interests with the United States.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI don\u2019t think that this resolution, this bill will gain<br \/>\ntraction in the House of Representatives, and if it does we will<br \/>\nhave to wait and see if Mr. Obama signs this bill,\u201d<\/i> historian<br \/>\nGerald Horne told RT.<\/p>\n<p>Horne believes that the Israeli lobby in Washington might sway<br \/>\nUS politicians including President Obama.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe Israeli lobby in particular has been quite energetic and<br \/>\nquite active in regard of lobbying for aid to the rebels, which is<br \/>\nquite curious since if these rebels come to power, I dare say that<br \/>\nIsrael will have many sleepless nights,\u201d<\/i> Horne says.<\/p>\n<p>The language of the proposed legislature is vague but it<br \/>\nsuggests the sale of small arms but specifies that <i>\u201cno<br \/>\nanti-aircraft defensive systems\u201d<\/i> would be provided.<\/p>\n<p>Despite fear that sending arms to the rebels might backfire if<br \/>\nal-Qaeda linked cells get a hold of them, US lawmakers are adamant<br \/>\nthat weapons will be supplied to those groups <i>\u201ccommitted to<br \/>\nrejecting terrorism and extremist ideologies.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky has voted against the bill,<br \/>\nwarning <i>\u201cYou will be funding today the allies of al Qaeda,\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nPaul said adding <i>\u201cIt is an irony you cannot overcome,\u201d<\/i><br \/>\nquotes the Washington Times.<\/p>\n<p>New Jersey democrat and co-author of the bill, Senator Robert<br \/>\nMenenedez addressed such concerns and stressed that the proposed<br \/>\nbill has in place a <i>\u201ctough vetting mechanism\u201d<\/i> to prevent<br \/>\nterrorist from obtaining US arms. <span><i>&#8220;Vital national<br \/>\ninterests are at stake and we cannot watch from the sidelines,&#8221;<\/i><br \/>\nMenenedez concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, US Secretary of State John Kerry is on a<br \/>\nmission to Jordan to meet with representatives from 11 nations, as<br \/>\npart of a US-Russian roadmap to end Syria&#8217;s violence.<\/p>\n<p>If the bill is to be adopted it Russia in the past has argued<br \/>\nthat arming the rebels would contradict international law.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has repeatedly said that its stance on Syria arises from<br \/>\nits concern for the Syrian people rather than the fate of Assad and<br \/>\nthat his forced departure would make the situation worse. Moscow<br \/>\ninsists that only direct talks between parties involved in the<br \/>\nconflict \u2014 the government and the opposition \u2014 can help to resolve<br \/>\nthe ongoing crisis. It also criticized some players in the<br \/>\ninternational arena for providing support and arming Syrian<br \/>\nrebels.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cInternational law does not permit the supply of arms to<br \/>\nnon-governmental actors and our point of view is that it is a<br \/>\nviolation of international law,\u201d<\/i> Lavrov said in March.<\/p>\n<p>The latest vote Horne argues <i>\u201cwill hamper diplomacy efforts<br \/>\nbut I don\u2019t think it will gut diplomacy efforts\u201d<\/i> because the<br \/>\nObama administration would like to reset with Moscow and then<br \/>\n<i>\u201cpivot towards China.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>At the Friends of Syria meeting in Amman,<br \/>\nwhich backs the Syrian opposition, Kerry will try to build<br \/>\nconsensus for an international peace conference next month in<br \/>\nGeneva.
