Last Friday, Anonymous kicked off a global on-line protest to
\nmark the 100th day of the hunger strike by prisoners protesting
\ntheir conditions and indefinite detention at the US base.<\/p>\n
The three day campaign was intended to raise awareness of the
\nhuman rights violations at Guantanamo, which include the indefinite
\ndetention of prisoners, many of whom have been cleared for release
\nyears ago. The series of \u201ctwitterstorms, email bombs and fax bombs\u201d
\nsaw hashtags #OpGITMO and #GTMO skyrocket in popularity on Twitter,
\nwith thousands of Twitter users joining in every few seconds.<\/p>\n
Activist groups demanding the closure of the Guantanamo Bay
\nprison marked the 100th day of a hunger strike at the detention
\nfacility by last week submitting a petition to the White House that
\nhad some 370,000 signatures.<\/p>\n
Richard Killmer, executive director of the National Religious
\nCampaign Against Torture, said that \u201cyears of detention without
\ncharge or trial have created a sense of desperation and
\nhopelessness among the men at Guantanamo, which has led over 100 of
\nthem to join a hunger strike,\u201d<\/i> AFP quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n
Clive Stafford Smith, a British attorney representing some of
\nthe detainees being held since 2002 at Guantanamo, also urged the
\nTwitter community on behalf of one of his clients, Shakar
\nAamer, to take action against the notorious prison.<\/p>\n
The message has been retwitted over 280 times.<\/p>\n
As of Monday, the military said 103 of the 166 prisoners were
\nparticipating in the hunger strike, which has continued for over
\n100 days. Some 30 of them are still being force fed \u2014 a practice
\ncondemned as \u2018torture\u2019 by the United Nations human rights office.
\nAt the same time, closed door military tribunals continue amid
\nclaims of secret monitoring of client conversations with lawyers,
\nas well as censorship of some court testimony.<\/p>\n
