\u201cThe United States of America will soon unveil the toughest and most aggressive round of economic sanctions on North Korea ever \u2013 and we will continue to isolate North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile programs once and for all,\u201d<\/em> Pence said Wednesday after meeting with Japan\u2019s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.<\/p>\n Although Pence didn\u2019t reveal the details, the penalties are said to be put in force before the end of the Olympic Games, scheduled to take place from February 9 to 25 in South Korea.<\/p>\n Currently on a six-day visit to Japan and South Korea, the vice president will be heading the US delegation during the opening ceremony on Friday. North Korea will be present as well, with its delegation marching together with its southern neighbor under a \u2018Korean Unification Flag\u2019.<\/p>\n The inter-Korean talks paved the way for Pyongyang\u2019s participation at the 2018 Games. Twenty-two athletes will represent the nation, competing in three sports and five disciplines. The 229-strong cheerleading team arrived in South Korea on Wednesday, and a North Korean orchestra is expected to follow later.<\/p>\n Amid the attempts of the two Koreas to ease tensions, the US, however, remains belligerent. Earlier, Russia\u2019s ambassador in Pyongyang, Aleksander Matsegora, cautioned that punitive measures, such as further slashing oil supplies to the country, could \u201cbe perceived as a declaration of war with all its consequences.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n In December, the UN Security Council voted in favor of reducing oil and petroleum imports.
