It was billed as a speech that would unite all Americans, but even with memorable lines, President Donald Trump\u2019s first State of the Union address seemed to only sharpen the contrasts between the political right and left.<\/p>\n
When Trump praised his special guest, 12-year-old Preston Sharp, for helping to place 40,000 American flags on the graves of dead soldiers, the president subtly socked the NFL players and other athletes who have \u201ctaken a knee\u201d<\/em> during the US national anthem, most often to protest police abuse.<\/p>\n Preston\u2019s devotion, Trump said, reminds us of \u201cwhy we proudly stand for the national anthem.\u201d<\/em> The line instantly brought Republican lawmakers to their feet for an extensive standing ovation, while only a sparse few Democrats got up to join in briefly before sitting back down amid the applause.<\/p>\n I never thought I would see the day an American political party not support standing during the national anthem <\/p>\n Disgusting Democrats. He brazenly promised that \u201c[drug] prices will come down, substantially. Watch.\u201d<\/em> But many doubt his ability to carry through on the vow.<\/p>\n Weird that @realDonaldTrump<\/a> is claiming that the prices of prescription drugs will come down when he picked a big pharma executive to be Secretary of HHS. <\/p>\n The same guy who raised the price of insulin by more than 1000%. #SOTU<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Rep. Trump did call for private partnerships and a streamlined permitting process, aiming for a maximum of two years.<\/p>\n \u201cTogether we can reclaim our great building heritage,\u201d<\/em> Trump said. But the response was tepid from Democrats, a fall from last year when they had expressed some constrained optimism over a bipartisan infrastructure deal, as opposed to issues like Obamacare and tax cuts.<\/p>\n America\u2019s future isn\u2019t stronger when @realDonaldTrump<\/a> gives away gigantic tax breaks to billionaires & giant corporations so there\u2019s no money for education, infrastructure, & the tools we need to succeed.<\/p>\n \u2014 Elizabeth Warren (@elizabethforma) 31 \u044f\u043d\u0432\u0430\u0440\u044f 2018 \u0433.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Too bad we continue to spend so much money RE-BUILDING the cities we’ve blown up in the Middle East! That money would have been better spent building our own infrastructure! #SOTU<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Ron Paul (@RonPaul) 31 \u044f\u043d\u0432\u0430\u0440\u044f 2018 \u0433.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n It was inevitable that Trump would bring up the hottest topic on Capitol Hill \u2013 immigration reform. However, what Trump might call an olive branch to the Democrats has only been interpreted as a poison pill.<\/p>\n While \u201cthe US is a compassionate nation,\u201d<\/em> Trump said, he also insisted that his concern was for \u201cAmerica\u2019s children\u201d and its forgotten communities. \u201cI want our poor to have their chance to rise.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cAmericans are dreamers too,\u201d<\/em> he said, a line that drew opposite reactions from conservatives and liberals, despite Trump\u2019s ostensible intentions. \u201cLet\u2019s come together, set politics aside, and finally get the job done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Sadly, Pres. Trump continued a hostage taking immigration policy by denying #Dreamers<\/a> a path to citizenship without policies that rip apart families and terrorize immigrant communities. #SOTU<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Richard Blumenthal (@SenBlumenthal) 31 \u044f\u043d\u0432\u0430\u0440\u044f 2018 \u0433.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n “Americans are dreamers, too” – designed to make Americans think Dreamers are murderers, should be remembered as one of the most disgusting lines in the history of #SOTU<\/a> speeches.<\/p>\n \u2014 John Iadarola (@johniadarola) 31 \u044f\u043d\u0432\u0430\u0440\u044f 2018 \u0433.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Even when it came to the issue of nuclear proliferation, Trump didn\u2019t manage to win over the hearts and minds that he needs to get much of his agenda through Congress.<\/p>\n \u201cPerhaps someday in the future there will be a magical moment when the countries of the world will get together to eliminate their nuclear weapons. China does not need to attack us to harm our economy.
