(Photo: Alex Wong \/ Getty Images)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department is threatening to force three states and twenty cities to turn over records related to compliance with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Jeff Sessions sent letters on Wednesday to officials from California, Oregon, Illinois, New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles, among others. Sessions\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/24\/sanctuary-cities-justice-department-subpoenas-365465\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0he was seeking the information in the interest of &#8220;public safety.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If these jurisdictions fail to respond to our request, fail to respond completely or fail to respond in a timely manner, we will exercise our lawful authorities and issue subpoenas for the information,&#8221; an anonymous department official told reporters on Wednesday, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-immigration-sanctuary\/justice-department-demands-documents-from-sanctuary-cities-idUSKBN1FD2GG\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The subpoena threats came after a previous round of letters. Thirty-eight jurisdictions were contacted over ICE cooperation policy in April and November last year, as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article196366509.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">McClatchy<\/a>\u00a0reported. An anonymous &#8220;senior DOJ official&#8221; told the news service that recipients of Wednesday\u2019s letter &#8220;either did not respond or responded inadequately.&#8221; Other recipients of the first series of letters were either deemed compliant or are still being reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Sessions ordered the department to withhold agency grants from so-called &#8220;sanctuary cities.&#8221; He was thwarted on numerous occasions. Federal District Courts in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/09\/15\/politics\/chicago-lawsuit-trump-sanctuary-cities-jag-funds\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">Chicago<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/immigration\/ct-trump-sanctuary-cities-funding-ruling-20171120-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">San Francisco<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/news\/judge-baylson-sanctuary-city-sessions-philadelphia-20171115.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0ruled that the decree was illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of mandated cooperation with ICE &#8220;argue that those policies can hurt public safety by making immigrants afraid to talk to police,&#8221; as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-na-pol-essential-washington-updates-justice-department-continues-crack-down-1516812435-htmlstory.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a>\u00a0noted Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, there has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/fact-check-no-evidence-undocumented-immigrants-commit-more-crimes-n777856\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">no proven link<\/a>\u00a0between undocumented immigrants and crime. Some research has shown foreign-born US residents are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/ubnow\/stories\/2017\/02\/adelman-immigrants-crime.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-slimstat=\"5\">less likely<\/a>\u00a0to commit crimes\u00a0than their American-born neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>The term &#8220;sanctuary city&#8221; is also something of a misnomer.
