Navarro condemned the \u201cgrossly shocking\u201d withholding of evidence from defense counsel in a case that could have landed the Bundys in prison for the rest of their lives. Navarro, who had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/judge-declares-mistrial-in-case-against-rancher-cliven-bundy-sons-and-militiaman\/2017\/12\/20\/49d91c24-e5c8-11e7-a65d-1ac0fd7f097e_story.html?utm_term=.1706ad859ecb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">declared a mistrial last month<\/a>, dismissed all charges against the Bundys.<\/p>\n<p>Navarro was especially riled because the FBI\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/oregon-standoff\/2018\/01\/cliven_bundy_standoff_case_thr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spent three years<\/a>\u00a0covering up or lying about the role of their snipers in the 2014 standoff. The Bundys faced conspiracy charges because they summoned militia to defend them after claiming FBI snipers had surrounded their ranch. Justice Department lawyers scoffed at this claim\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona-investigations\/2017\/12\/20\/cliven-bundy-nevada-ranch-cattle-grazing-blm-standoff-trial\/965402001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">but newly-released documents vindicate the Bundys<\/a>.\u00a0In an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktvb.com\/news\/local\/ammon-bundy-speaks-out-they-basically-came-to-kill-our-family\/507670015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a>\u00a0Saturday, Ammon Bundy reviled the feds: \u201cThey basically came to kill our family, they surrounded us with snipers. And then they wanted to lie about it all like none of it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the heavily-armed activists who flocked to the scene feared that the FBI snipers had a license to kill the Bundys. Their reaction cannot be understood without considering a landmark 1990s case that continues to shape millions of Americans\u2019 attitude towards Washington: the federal killings and coverups at Ruby Ridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/2001\/04\/30\/randy-weavers-return-from-ruby-ridge\/946b58c3-2d46-4df0-9b06-f5ca7c562d09\/?utm_term=.587fba00da2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Randy Weaver<\/a>\u00a0and his family lived in an isolated cabin in the mountains of northern Idaho.
