{"id":342274,"date":"2018-01-04T02:42:49","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T01:42:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/washington-state-sues-motel-6-over-collusion-with-ice-rt-us-news\/"},"modified":"2018-01-04T02:42:49","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T01:42:49","slug":"washington-state-sues-motel-6-over-collusion-with-ice-rt-us-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/washington-state-sues-motel-6-over-collusion-with-ice-rt-us-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington State sues Motel 6 over collusion with ICE \u2014 RT US News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><time class=\"date date_article-header\">Published time: 4 Jan, 2018 00:27 <\/time><\/p>\n<p>        Several Motel 6 locations allegedly handed over guest information to federal immigration enforcement agents, according to a lawsuit brought by Washington State&#8217;s attorney general.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text  js-mediator-article\">\n<p>Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D-Washington) filed the lawsuit against Motel 6 in King County Superior Court Wednesday, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/agportal-s3bucket.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploadedfiles\/Another\/News\/Press_Releases\/Complaint.Scan2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">court documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The disclosures allegedly made by six Motel 6 locations in Washington State, focused on providing private information to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the form of driver&#8217;s license numbers, birth dates and license plate numbers. More than 9,100 guests were targeted in the operation by four of the six locations, even though the establishment\u2019s privacy policy said it would protect guests from these specific actions, according to a statement released by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-sues-motel-6-violating-privacy-discriminating-against-thousands-washingtonians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ferguson&#8217;s office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It claims the disclosures made by Motel 6 violated the Consumer Protection Act and Washington State&#8217;s Law Against Discrimination. After ICE agents had the list, they circled names that sounded Latino. As a result of the operation, six individuals were detained by ICE, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>This particular location in Washington gave out personal information 228 times in a period of 225 days, according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson\u2019s office said that it would ask the court to order Motel 6 to pay up to $2,000 for each customer&#8217;s information that it handed over to ICE agents \u2013 or at least $18.2 million, plus fees and court costs.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWashingtonians have a right to privacy, and protection from discrimination,\u201d<\/em> Ferguson said in the statement. <em>\u201cI will hold Motel 6 accountable and uncover the whole story of their disturbing conduct.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In September, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoenixnewtimes.com\/news\/motel-6-calling-ice-undocumented-guests-phoenix-immigration-lawyers-9683244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix New Times<\/a> released a report showing that two Motel 6 locations in Arizona shared guest data with ICE. Following this report, Motel 6&#8217;s parent company, G6 Hospitality, said guest data sharing <em>\u201cwas implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management,\u201d<\/em> according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-09-14\/motel-6-just-left-the-light-on-for-ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloomberg<\/a>.
