Murdoch publication slammed over \u2018bullying\u2019 teen with relentless media spotlight \u2014 RT UK News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>        The Times is at the center of a transphobic bullying storm after the respected national newspaper carried a whole series of articles about a teenager \u2013 in the space of just two weeks. Transgender Lily Madigan took to social media to beg journalists to end reports about her, insisting her mental health is being impacted under the relentless attention of the media spotlight.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The student, 19, was first noticed by the Rupert Murdoch-owned paper when she was elected as the woman\u2019s officer for Rochester and Strood, in Kent, after being involved in a campaign to oust the lesbian woman previously in the role.<\/p>\n<p>A fellow Labour member in Kent revealed to RT UK that Lily contacted the Times herself, after being proud of her election to the voluntary position.<\/p>\n<p>However, since then, the paper has appeared to follow her every move, sparking outrage from journalist and commentator Owen Jones, trans rights activists, and scores of angered social media users.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Please stop. I can\u2019t handle it anymore. I\u2019m so mentally distressed that I can\u2019t sleep or eat or go to school. No one deserves this. There\u2019s only so many times I can read lies or my deadname or misgendering. I\u2019m just a teenager. Please just stop. I don\u2019t want to do this anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lily Madigan (@madigan_lily) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/madigan_lily\/status\/937951896144359424?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 5, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>On November 15, an article was titled \u2018Labour officials quit in transgender dispute\u2019 explaining how members of a council committee stood down over Lily\u2019s appointment.\u00a0 Five days later an article entitled \u2018Trans teenager Lily Madigan voted in as a Labour women\u2019s officer\u2019 was printed.<\/p>\n<p>On November 25, news was carried about Lily applying to be part of a Labour training program, titled \u2018Trans teenager Lily Madigan applies for Jo Cox women\u2019s leadership scheme\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, another article came, under the headline \u2018Lily Madigan: I\u2019m a transgender teen agitator; I make an ideal Labour women\u2019s officer\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>On November 29, trans activist Debbie Hayton wrote an article titles \u2018We transgender women cannot self identify our sex\u2019 in which she questioned the right of trans women to take on specialist female roles.<\/p>\n<p>With every article came a stream of abuse over Twitter and Facebook, prompting a huge row over whether a trans woman can have a role representing all women, such as Lily was elected to by Labour Party members.<\/p>\n<p>Vile messages called her a man and insisted she<em> \u201cstole a woman\u2019s job\u201d<\/em> and has <em>\u201cno right\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cno experience\u201d<\/em> to be the voice of women. Lily herself issued an urgent plea to end the media attention.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPlease stop. I can\u2019t handle it anymore. I\u2019m so mentally distressed that I can\u2019t sleep or eat or go to school. No one deserves this. There\u2019s only so many times I can read lies or my deadname or misgendering. I\u2019m just a teenager. Please just stop. I don\u2019t want to do this anymore,\u201d<\/em> she tweeted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/410541-rape-twitter-transgender-labour\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2017.11\/thumbnail\/5a1464affc7e9337688b4567.jpg\" alt=\"Trans Labour officer Lily Madigan with Jeremy Corbyn \u00a9 Lily Madigan\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>The anguished cry for help angered left-wing activists who labelled the paper <em>\u201cbigoted.\u201d<\/em> Author, commentator and activist Owen Jones was among them.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI hope the transphobes, including The Times newspaper, are proud of themselves for vindictively bullying this 19 year old girl. All my solidarity, Lily. The bigots are going to lose, and what\u2019s more, they know it,\u201d<\/em> he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Others slammed the paper for their coverage which included a comment piece from a trans woman.<\/p>\n<p>After every article Lily was attacked online. It later emerged a previous Twitter account in Lily\u2019s name made jokes about blowjobs, rape and Jimmy Savile.<\/p>\n<p>Lily denies the account was ever hers, but the image is her as a boy named Liam making an offensive gesture, and, among those who spoke with the account in 2013 was Lily\u2019s own brother, casting doubt on her story. However, she was backed by the Labour Party \u2013 but mercilessly abused online.<\/p>\n<p>Women who were on the Jo Cox program stood up for Lily and wrote a letter to The Times, but it was not published.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNothing newsworthy about a trans woman applying for the Jo Cox scheme, shame on The Times for trying to make out like there&#8217;s anything wrong with it,\u201d<\/em> one woman wrote.<\/p>\n<p><em> \u201cBest of luck to Lily and the rest of the applicants.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cVery pleased to see that my local MP has signed this letter.
