He previously indicated the work had been done.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Davis also conceded there had been no economic impact report undertaken before the cabinet decision to leave the customs union, and no assessment had been made of the possible economic effect of a no-deal Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The economic effects of Brexit could match the financial crisis, according to Davis. He said it was impossible to predict because it will be a <em>\u201cparadigm shift\u201d<\/em> in the same way as the crash of 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The Brexit secretary made the admissions during a grilling by the Commons Brexit Committee, which had demanded the assessments were released by the government after Davis and other members of the government signaled they existed. Labour forced a vote in the Commons, with the outcome requiring the government to release them. Officials later released 850 pages of analysis.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KrSkTh2t0fY\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Committee Chairman Hilary Benn challenged Davis at the hearing on Wednesday as to whether the documents received constituted impact assessments, or whether any had even been undertaken. Davis replied: <em>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing \u2026 there\u2019s no such systematic impact assessments that I\u2019m aware of.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pressing the issue, Benn said: <em>\u201cSo the answer to my question is \u2018no\u2019? They were not forecasts of what would happen to them after Brexit, Davis said, adding that the reports \u201cweren\u2019t that good.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When Benn suggested this was <em>\u201cstrange,\u201d<\/em> the minister said formal assessments were not needed to know that <em>\u201cregulatory hurdles\u201d<\/em> would have an impact. <em>\u201cI am not a fan of economic models because they have all proven wrong,\u201d<\/em> Davis added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here is David Davis back in June saying that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DExEUgov?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DExEUgov<\/a> has 50-60 sectoral analyses already done. In a TV interview in June he said:<em> \u201cIn my job I don\u2019t think out loud and I don\u2019t make guesses. Those two things. I try and make decisions. You make those based on the data. That data is being gathered. We\u2019ve got 50, nearly 60, sectoral analyses already done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In October, he told Benn\u2019s committee that Prime Minister Theresa May had read <em>\u201csummary outcomes<\/em>\u201d of impact assessments, which he said went into <em>\u201cexcruciating detail.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The comments come after a tumultuous series of days in the Brexit negotiations, with the progress in talks between the UK and EU scuppered by disagreements over how to deal with the border in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<h2>Davis lied to parliament, MPs say<\/h2>\n<p>MPs have slammed Davis on Twitter as <em>\u201cincompetent\u201d, \u201cinsincere\u201d, \u201cconceited\u201d, \u201cvain\u201d<\/em> and<em> \u201cwholly unfit for office\u201d<\/em> after it was revealed on Wednesday there are no Brexit impact assessments.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt what point is David Davis going to be help to account for such blatant lying? He must surely now resign. He simply cannot be allowed to go around lying to parliament and the British public in this way. Mendacious, conceited, vain, duplicitous, wholly unfit for office,\u201d<\/em> Labour MP David Lammy said.
