On July 4, Adam Kokesh hopes to lead 1,000 protesters armed with guns<\/a>\u00a0into Washington, D.C. to advocate for open carry. In Kokesh\u2019s eyes, a crowd armed with guns compares to the nonviolent civil disobedience practiced by Mahatma Gandhi. <\/p>\n

Kokesh answered the Washington Post<\/a>through a series of text messages: <\/p>\n

\n

Suppose the D.C. police, as they have promised, block the marchers from crossing into Washington? How should they respond? <\/p>\n

\u201cWith Satyagraha,\u201d Kokesh, 31, texted The Washington Post. That is a term used by Mahatma Gandhi to describe his strategy of nonviolent resistance to British rule in India. […] <\/p>\n

Did his response of \u201csatyagraha\u201d mean violence is unacceptable? <\/p>\n

\u201cOnly if absolutely necessary in defense of life or limb,\u201d he wrote. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Compare Satyagraha to Kokesh\u2019s event description<\/a>\u00a0on Facebook. Although Kokesh claims his march will \u201cpeacefully turn back\u201d if confronted with \u201cphysical resistance,\u201d he ominously warns the march will be violent if \u201cthe government chooses to make it violent.\u201d He also proclaims that \u201c[w]e will march with rifles loaded & slung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated & cower in submission to tyranny.\u201d <\/p>\n

Because open carry is illegal in D.C., the police chief has already warned<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cpassing into the District of Columbia with firearms is a violation of the law and we\u2019ll have to treat it as such.\u201d Even open carry groups like Gun Owners of America are wary of the march, which is now at over 4,000 Facebook RSVPs. <\/p>\n

Kokesh is not alone in trying to link guns to civil rights movements. The argument has at times been taken up by the National Rifle Association<\/a>\u00a0and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
