The findings are likely to impact a legal battle that placed glyphosate, a key ingredient in the company\u2019s popular weed killer, on a list of cancer-causing chemicals. <\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text  js-mediator-article\">\n<p>The study, published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jnci\/article-abstract\/doi\/10.1093\/jnci\/djx233\/4590280\">Journal of the National Cancer Institute<\/a> Thursday, found no correlation between glyphosate <em>\u201cand any solid tumors or lymphoid malignancies overall, including non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and its subtypes,\u201d<\/em> according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers did find <em>\u201csome evidence of increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia among the highest exposed group\u201d<\/em> but said it was <em>\u201cnot statistically significant.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s findings contradict the 2015 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iarc.fr\/en\/media-centre\/iarcnews\/pdf\/MonographVolume112.pdf\">conclusion<\/a> by the World Health Organization&#8217;s (WHO) cancer research unit; which stated that the active weed-killing ingredients in Roundup and other herbicides were <em>&#8220;probably carcinogenic to humans.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a result of the WHO study, California announced in June 2017 that Monsanto would be required to put a label on its products warning customers it contains cancer-causing chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Two US agricultural workers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/316995-usa-workers-sue-monsanto-roundup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently sued Monsanto<\/a>, claiming the company\u2019s weed-killer herbicide caused their cancers. They further accused the biotech giant of pressuring regulators to downplay the health risks from Roundup.<\/p>\n<p>Monsanto\u2019s lawyers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/400461-monsanto-refutes-iarc-glyphosate\/\">argued<\/a> that WHO ignored two major studies that found no link to cancer. Leaked documents from August 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/398494-monsanto-leaks-suggest-scientists-manipulated\/\">show<\/a> Monsanto attempted to <em>\u2018kill\u2019<\/em> research on its Roundup weed killer. They have asked a court to cancel Monsanto\u2019s Intacta GMO seed patent, claiming irregularities, including the company\u2019s alleged failure to prove it brings technological innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Monsanto stopped the launch of a chemical designed to be applied to crop seeds. Multiple reports showed the new chemical caused skin irritation.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;There have been limited cases of skin irritation, including rashes, that appear to be associated with the handling and application of this seed treatment product,&#8221;<\/em> Brian Naber, US commercial operations lead for Monsanto, said in a letter to customers about NemaStrike.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s finding could impact the company\u2019s presence in Europe. EU countries voted on the issue on Thursday but failed to reach agreement on a five-year extension proposal.<\/p>\n<p>More than a million Europeans have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/407667-million-europeans-monsanto-banned\/\">signed<\/a> a petition against Monsanto&#8217;s weed killer Roundup over fears that it causes cancer. It&#8217;s license in Europe expires on December 15, and EU officials haven\u2019t extended it.<\/p>\n<p>The EU had offered a 12 to 18-month extension of the license to give more time for further scientific study by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
