{"id":332251,"date":"2017-10-26T23:37:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T22:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/google-soros-backed-fact-checkers-join-forces-to-control-news-search-results-rt-us-news\/"},"modified":"2017-10-26T23:37:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-26T22:37:27","slug":"google-soros-backed-fact-checkers-join-forces-to-control-news-search-results-rt-us-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/google-soros-backed-fact-checkers-join-forces-to-control-news-search-results-rt-us-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Google &#038; Soros-backed \u2018fact-checkers\u2019 join forces to control news search results \u2014 RT US News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        Google has partnered with an organization largely funded by billionaire George Soros to \u201cfact-check\u201d news stories, a move that could affect search results for certain news agencies. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Erica Anderson, Partnerships Manager at Google News Lab, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/topics\/journalism-news\/building-trust-online-partnering-international-fact-checking-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> Thursday that the company will partner with the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the Poynter Institute to<em> \u201cfact-check\u201d<\/em> news stories that appear on the search engine.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWith so much information available around the clock and across devices, being able to understand at a glance what\u2019s true and what\u2019s false online is increasingly important,\u201d<\/em> Anderson, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/news\/google-news-lab-partners-poynters-international-fact-checking-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She said Google will work with the IFCN in three ways: increase the number of fact-checkers by holding <em>\u201cglobal fact-check workshops\u201d<\/em> and offering stipends for new fact-checking organizations; expanding the IFCN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/international-fact-checking-network-fact-checkers-code-principles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Code of Principles<\/a> into new regions; and providing fact-checking tools to the IFCN community at no charge.<\/p>\n<p>The code of principles requires news agencies to obey five commitments to ensure news agencies remain honest, transparent and nonpartisan. There are 36 signatories to the Code of Principles, including the left-leaning Washington Post Fact Checker and other fact-checking organizations from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Alexios Mantzarlis, the director of the IFCN at Poynter released a statement, saying the 12-month partnership will <em>\u201cenable the IFCN to encourage more fact-checking around the world, while also helping raise the standards and impact of existing initiatives.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/395911-soros-netanyahu-orban-billboard\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2017.07\/thumbnail\/5963a975fc7e938a478b4573.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Attila Kisbenedek\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Poynter Institute for Media Studies is openly <a href=\"http:\/\/about.poynter.org\/about-us\/press-room\/13-million-in-grants-omidyar-network-open-society-foundations-will-expand-poynte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funded<\/a> by Soros\u2019 Open Society Foundations. Soros, a veteran billionaire vulture-capitalist, supported former secretary of state Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Soros was criticised for transferring nearly $18 billion to his Open Society Foundations, making it the second largest charity in the US after the Bill and Melinda Gates\u2019 Foundation. The charity has been accused of inciting so-called <em>\u201ccolor revolutions\u201d<\/em> to install governments friendly to the US. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said through a statement that certain Soros funded organizations <em>\u201cdefame the Jewish state and seek to deny it the right to defend itself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also accused Soros of using his money to fund liberal NGOs influencing the European Union to accept asylum seekers in order to create a <em>&#8220;new, mixed, Muslimized Europe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Poynter Institute also receives funding from the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Endowment for Democracy and the Omidyar Network, which is the nonprofit for liberal billionaire and founder of eBay, Pierre Omidyar.<\/p>\n<p>The Google-Poynter partnership was announced days before executives from Google, Facebook and Twitter are all scheduled to testify before the Senate and House Intelligence Committees on alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook, which has come under scrutiny for their part in spreading false news stories during the election, has also partnered with the Poynter Institute to launch its <em>\u201cdisputed\u201d<\/em> news tag on stories deemed false by fact-checking organisations working with the social media giant.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/407861-twitter-policy-rt-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ MORE: Twitter bans all RT advertising, citing <em>\u2018election interference\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stories flagged by Facebook users as \u2018fake news\u2019 are passed on to these fact- checkers for verification.
