Its streets are perpetually gridlocked and garage fees cost more than rent in other parts of the country.\u00a0Most people who live in the city don\u2019t even own cars and regard them as an occasionally necessary nuisance. Mostly, they hail a cab. Or they walk or take the subway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So it makes\u00a0<em>perfect<\/em>\u00a0sense for a major car company to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.autonews.com\/article\/20171018\/RETAIL\/171019658\/how-a-move-to-n-y-is-reshaping-cadillac\">relocate the headquarters<\/a>\u00a0of its luxury division there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Well, yes \u2013 in a way. The\u00a0<em>new<\/em>\u00a0way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">GM\u2019s way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Which is not to sell you a car. Nor for you to own one. Instead you will \u201cexperience the brand\u201d \u2013 these are the words of Cadillac\u2019s new honcho, Johan de Nysschen. You will\u00a0<em>experience<\/em>\u00a0Cadillacs in the same way that you experience a stay at a fancy hotel:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Briefly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Occasionally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And, of course, expensively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You will sign up for a\u00a0<em>subscription<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a monthly\/yearly fee, like a membership at a health club. This will allow you to use the facilities; to access different GM vehicles \u2013 in order to \u201cexperience\u201d them.<\/p>\n<p>De Nysschen does not seek buyers. He seeks\u00a0<em>consumers<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 his word. \u201cWe wanted to see\u00a0<em>luxury consumption<\/em>\u00a0through the eyes of our\u00a0<em>consumers<\/em>,\u201d he said about the move to NYC.<\/p>\n<p>Consumption.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, short-term rentals of various models in the GM inventory rather than owning or even leasing one the single car. Use by the hour\/day\/weekend \u2013 and so on. The car is never yours. The payments never end. Consume, consume, consume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Such a deal!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Well, it is \u2013 for GM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And for any other car company that follows this new consumption-based business model.
