{"id":332071,"date":"2017-10-25T20:30:25","date_gmt":"2017-10-25T19:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/what-did-hillary-clinton-know-consortiumnews\/"},"modified":"2017-10-25T20:30:25","modified_gmt":"2017-10-25T19:30:25","slug":"what-did-hillary-clinton-know-consortiumnews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/what-did-hillary-clinton-know-consortiumnews\/","title":{"rendered":"What Did Hillary Clinton Know? \u2013 Consortiumnews"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>Exclusive:<\/strong> With the disclosure that Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign helped pay for the original Russia-gate allegations against Donald Trump, a new question arises: what did Clinton know and when did she know it, reports Robert Parry.<\/p>\n<p>By Robert Parry<\/p>\n<p>The revelation that Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped pay for the notorious \u201cSteele Dossier\u201d of hearsay claims about Donald Trump\u2019s relations with Russia is not surprising but is noteworthy given how long the mystery about the funding was allowed to linger.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19800\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/23158392405_d3e3b60cb8_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/23158392405_d3e3b60cb8_o-300x200.jpg\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19800\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"  \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19800\" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/23158392405_d3e3b60cb8_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"  \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another mild surprise is that the Clinton campaign would have had a direct hand in the financing rather than maintaining an arm\u2019s length relationship to the dossier by having some \u201cfriend of the campaign\u201d make the payments and giving Clinton more deniability.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the campaign appears to have relied on its lawyer, Marc E. Elias of Perkins Coie, and a confidentiality agreement to provide some insulation between Clinton and the dossier\u2019s startling claims which presumably helped inform Clinton\u2019s charge in the final presidential debate that Trump was Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s \u201cpuppet.\u201d Indeed, how much Clinton personally knew about the dossier and its financing remains an intriguing question for investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the facts about who commissioned the dossier were forced out by a congressional Republican subpoena seeking the bank records of Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that hired former British intelligence operative Christopher Steele to compile the opposition research, known as \u201coppo,\u201d against Trump.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the legal wrangling over that subpoena, the Clinton\/DNC law firm, Perkins Coie, wrote a letter releasing Fusion GPS from its confidentiality agreement.<\/p>\n<p>After that letter, The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/clinton-campaign-dnc-paid-for-research-that-led-to-russia-dossier\/2017\/10\/24\/226fabf0-b8e4-11e7-a908-a3470754bbb9_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_dossier-630pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&amp;tid=a_inl&amp;utm_term=.fcddf8e19945\">reported<\/a> on Tuesday night that the Clinton campaign and the DNC had helped fund the Steele effort with attorney Elias retaining Fusion GPS in April 2016 and with Fusion GPS then hiring Steele.<\/p>\n<p>The Post reported that \u201cpeople familiar with the matter\u201d disclosed that outline of the arrangement but still would not divulge&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2017\/10\/25\/what-did-hillary-clinton-know\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exclusive: With the disclosure that Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign helped pay for the original Russia-gate allegations against Donald Trump, a new question arises: what did Clinton know and when did she know it, reports Robert Parry.
