These need to be removed and disposed of appropriately,\u201d<\/em> the firm said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/chemical-event-at-sellafield-21-october-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe army\u2019s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team deal with hundreds of these issues every year, recovering chemicals from science laboratories in places like schools and universities.These chemicals are used extensively in many industries and are well understood.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Industrial solvents, such as Tetrahydrofuran, are potentially flammable in liquid states and can crystallize and become hazardous.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the canisters were buried and then destroyed in two separate batches by the army\u2019s Explosives Ordinance Disposal Team who took them to a safe location on the Sellafield site Saturday. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sellafield is home to 126 tons (139 US tons) of plutonium, the world\u2019s largest civilian stockpile.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/378340-nuclear-accidents-report-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ MORE: Dozens of nuclear alerts underreported by British MoD, new study reveals<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1957, the plant, then known as Windscale, was the site of Britain\u2019s worst ever nuclear disaster when a fire burned for three days, releasing radioactive material into the air that spread across the UK and the rest of Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/407418-sellafield-bomb-disposal-nuclear-plant\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
