Tom Marino has informed me that he is withdrawing his name from consideration as drug czar. Tom is a fine man and a great Congressman!\u201d<\/em> President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday morning, two days after CBS\u2019 60 Minutes program featured several former employees of the Drug Enforcement Administration saying that the legislation that Marino (R-Pennsylvania) championed last year made it all but <em>\u201cimpossible\u201d<\/em> for the government to go after unscrupulous distributors of addictive opioid pills.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rep.Tom Marino has informed me that he is withdrawing his name from consideration as drug czar. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/920268091329859585?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/center><\/div>\n<p>The Justice Department, under which the DEA operates, said Tuesday it will review the law\u2019s impact on the government\u2019s enforcement powers.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, called <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.washingtonpost.com\/g\/page\/investigations\/how-the-drug-industry-triumped-over-the-dea-the-documents\/2248\/\">Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act<\/a>, was signed into law by president Obama last year, after it was passed by both chambers of Congress. Critics say it effectively stripped the DEA of its authority to investigate suspicious transactions as the government is now required to meet a higher standard before taking enforcement actions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/406900-whistleblowers-opioid-congress-dea\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2017.10\/thumbnail\/59e4f212fc7e93cc578b4567.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 007 David Parry \/ Global Look Press\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the CBS program, former head of the DEA&#8217;s Office of Diversion Control Joe Rannazzisi also suggested that Marino put pressure on the DEA to get rid of him last year, after Rannazzisi accused Marino and the bill\u2019s co-sponsor Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee) of protecting distributors he was investigating.<\/p>\n<p>Marino and Blackburn wrote the DOJ inspector general, demanding that Rannazzisi be investigated for trying to <em>&#8220;intimidate the United States Congress.&#8221;<\/em> Soon after, Rannazzisi was stripped of his responsibilities. He went from supervising 600 people to supervising none &#8211; so he resigned, Rannazzisi told CBS.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Trump nominated Marino to lead the Office of National Drug Control Policy. In August, the president said the opioid epidemic was a <em>\u201cnational emergency,\u201d<\/em> after his Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis reported that the US faces the death toll equal to <em>\u201cSeptember 11th every three weeks\u201d<\/em> as opioid abuse claims the lives of up to 142 Americans every day.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump has yet to formally declare the emergency status, which would then unlock additional resources to fight the epidemic.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are going to be doing that next week&#8230; It\u2019s a very important step. And to get to that step, a lot of work has to be done, and it\u2019s time-consuming work,\u201d<\/em> Trump said at a news conference Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Former DEA officials featured in the CBS program also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/406900-whistleblowers-opioid-congress-dea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alleged<\/a> that their bosses at the agency during the Obama administration \u2018shut off\u2019 investigations into large distributors of addictive opioid pills, even when there was ample evidence of suspicious dealings. The drug industry used their money and influence to pressure top lawyers at the DEA, Rannazzisi said.<\/p>\n<p>The ex-employees said one of the reasons for the roadblocks was the<em> \u201crevolving door\u201d<\/em> between the DEA and the drug industry, as a number of the administration\u2019s top lawyers landed lobbying jobs for the pharmaceutical companies and drug distributors upon leaving the government, including the former DEA attorney who wrote the legislation for which Marino is now in hot water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"http:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/407020-marino-nomination-opioid-epidemic-trump\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
