There is also uncertainty over the timing of a potentially large order from Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>There has also been speculation that the bid for efficiency is in response to uncertainty over Brexit.\u00a0 Sources, however, have said the UK\u2019s withdrawal from the EU is <em>\u201cnot a factor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Steve Turner, assistant general secretary of the Unite trade union, warned on Monday the cuts would undermine Britain\u2019s defense capability.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/405038-british-army-waste-money\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdni.rt.com\/files\/2017.09\/thumbnail\/59ce5a6afc7e9310388b4568.jpg\" alt=\"Foxhound Light Protected Patrol Vehicle \u00a9 Crown copyright\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cIf these job cuts materialize it will significantly undermine our nation\u2019s sovereign defense capability and leave us reliant on foreign powers and foreign companies for the successor to the Typhoon and the defense of the nation,\u201d<\/em> he said, the BBC reported on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOnce these jobs are gone, they are gone for a generation and with them the skills and ability to control our own defense and manufacture the next generation of fighter jets and other defense equipment in the UK.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Estimating that by 2020 a quarter of Britain\u2019s defense budget would be paid out to American companies such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin, the union called on the government to encourage in-house development and spending.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt a time of Brexit, these are precisely the kind of jobs the UK government should be protecting,\u201d<\/em> Turner said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRather than shipping our defense spend overseas to factories in America and cutting defense, ministers should be investing in jobs, skills and communities by buying British.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Theresa May\u2019s official spokesman said ahead of the announcement on Tuesday: <em>\u201cWe do have a long track record of working with BAE Systems and with its works and we\u2019ll continue to do so.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/406218-bae-job-cuts-defence\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
