A British government proposal to list Google and Facebook as publishers and take responsibility for everything posted on their sites has been slammed as a \u201cgross intrusion to freedom of speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karen Bradley, the culture secretary, has said the government is considering changing the legal status of some internet companies amid growing concerns about copyright infringement and the spread of extremist material online.<\/p>\n

The internet groups are currently considered as conduits of information rather than as publishers under UK law, which means they have limited responsibility for what appears on their sites.<\/p>\n

Media commentator Neil Wallace told RT listing them as publishers or media outlets would be \u201ccompletely ludicrous\u201d<\/em> and \u201ceven laughable.\u201d<\/em> He says while Facebook and Google should be doing far more to \u201cclean up their act,\u201d<\/em> in practice such a proposal is impractical.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is of course a gross intrusion to freedom of speech. But more significantly, frankly it\u2019s completely unworkable.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is simply impractical. Who on Earth is going to monitor this? How is this going to be done? It can\u2019t work, it won\u2019t work and it shouldn\u2019t work,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

Stephen Green, of Christian Voice advocacy group, says while the move could amount to an infringement of freedom of speech, \u201cthe problem at the moment is that nobody is accountable \u2013 the social media platforms aren\u2019t accountable, and there is no way of holding those who post to account.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes when you\u2019re writing stuff you can get a little bit carried away and be a bit more harsh than you would be face-to-face,\u201d<\/em> he told RT.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what the government is saying \u2013 that you shouldn\u2019t be permitted to put stuff on social media which you couldn\u2019t say face-to-face to somebody. That\u2019s a pretty fundamental principle, I think.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He says he has some concerns with the government\u2019s proposed code of conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not able to \u2013 under their code \u2013 say anything negative about homosexuality or negative about Islam \u2013 then that is an infringement of freedom of speech.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBut [those] just slagging people off or posting fake news must be accountable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
